The one I looked at, Speedhut from the US, the cable is just that. It connects the transponder on the end to the device. It can be coiled up out the way.
The claim is that the transponder will work through metal, just like the ones fitted to gps in cars.

I've been using a Speedhut on a different bike (MZ/Rotax) for a couple of years now, and it seems to work pretty well. As nickguzzi pointed out, the cable isn't the antenna. That's the little black box at the end of the cable. I mounted mine on top of the tail light. The only drawbacks to it are the need to wait a bit after starting the bike before you drive off, to allow it to acquire enough satellites. If you don't, it won't read correctly. It also stops working occasionally if you loose line-of-sight to the satellites, like in a deep canyon, but other than that, I'm happy with it.

I just purchased a Legendary combo speedo and tach. I started to hook it up and the blinker LED's are on and flash off when blinkers are on. I ordered a Podtronics to switch to negative earth. Been wanting to do that for a while. Once it is installed, I will come back with notes.

Do you ever drive it in the concrete canyons? How is it there? That is where I have always had the most significant problems with GPS signals, especially here in Auckland where the azimuth is a bit low.

I also have a speedo and tach from speed hut on my norton.
When ordering i said it was for a motorcycle and they sent it with a shortened cable.
the antenne box has a magnet and mine sits perfectly out of sight on the inside of one of my headlight ears .
sorry no photo, i can´t work out how to post one .

Just thought if anybody would like a photo i could send one with email, just pm me.
I am more than happy with these gauges.
I have to ride through one of the most heavily policed areas in NZ (the Dome Valley )quite often ,and over the holiday periods you can and will be pinged for 4 km over the limit .
so accurate clocks are a must for me.

I just start the bike and drive off. The speedo is working before I get out of my side road. It isn't hard to go ten yards under the speed limit, without a speedo.

i have been running the set from legendary from when they came out. i also helped them with how to wire them for neg earth and to keep the hot start option. as ken stated you can loose the speedo in highly shaded arias like mountains depending on the angle or tunnels but other than that i am very happy with them as to look and function along with the lighting in them. i mounted the antenna block on the tail light fairing and you have to look to notice it. as to holding them in the cups either clear silicone under them or you can drill and tap for 2 small set screws around the cups in inconspicuous places to put a SMALL amount of pressure on them to hold them in.
