GPS Speedometer on a Budget

I was having no end of speedometer issues with the purple bike - non-functional odometer, swapped with a spare; drive cable snapped, replaced; drive stripped, replaced; new cable snapped… and my spare speedo was waving at me like Forrest flagging down Lt. Dan…

Putting on electronic instruments would be the ultimate solution, but just not in the motorcycle parts budget right now.

So exploring the Amazon I go. None of the conventional GPS speedometers will fit in a Commando instrument holder…. Then I find this HUD GPS speedometer. Form factor is a little weird, but that is what 3D printers are for. It also is powered by a USB interface - a DC-DC USB converter will provide power, and is small enough to fit in the headlight shell. Rolled a chrome bezel on the 3D printed adapter, J-B Weld the speedometer into it, and I have an accurate GPS digital speedometer for less than $60 CAD. In the words of Red Green - “This is only temporary unless it lasts a while…”

I once gutted a speedo and fitted a bicycle digital speedo underneath the clock face with the readout lined up in the trip meter slot
I fitted the magnet in the drive sprocket and the pulse counter on the swinging arm
Not the easiest to read but I had better eyesight then!!
But spot on accurate

Let's see how temporary this is?
An accurate speedo is becoming a must these days
