Believe it or not there is nobody or any outfit here in a city of 180,000 people that polishes aluminum. Crazy! There are a few places that do wheels on cars but they don't want to deal with small motorcycle parts.

I don't have a garage or shop otherwise I would takle it myself. If anyone knows of a reputable place, I'm into it. I'm in Saskatchewan so the closer to me the better but at this point I'll take what I can get. I want my lower fork legs, rear brake caliper and the tach/speedo buckets done. Thanks everyone.

All you need is an electric drill and a basic polishing kit (and maybe some various grades of abrasive paper?). As for space you shouldn't need much at all really, and the vast majority of the work can be done with the parts still fixed to the bike.

I thought about it but I live in a very small place and literally have no room to tinker unless I want to do this stuff on my kitchen floor or living room, which is ultimately the same room. I do have access to a very cold unheated garage, but it is -30 deg. celcius with the windchill right now so that is not going to happen.

There must be someone locally (or in the province..!) who does chorme plating? They will have the equipment to make it shine like a mirror.

Now, try finding someone in Canada willing and able to replace the foam in your seat.....

I remember when I had a VW I had a few pieces chromed and they were sent out of province as well. It's terrible here for that kind of thing. With a city full of gearheads and tons of vintage hotrods there has to be something but I have no leads.

I did see brand new seat foam somewhere just recently though. Walridge motors I think. www.walridge.com e-mail and ask but I am sure I just saw new seat foam for a Commando last night in my Walridge catalog.

Yeah, you can buy a seat, or a cover - not the foam. I called the huge fancy-pants Harley Dealership (http://hdto.com/DocumentPage.aspx?PageName=AboutUs figuring those boys like their custom saddles... they sent me to a bunch of bozos that did a crap job. A few weeks later I got calls from the dealership and an indivdual asking me how much I charged to do custom seats.....
I guess I should have bought some genuine harley oil with my bandana and boots and wallet chain and water bottle and sunglasses and baby sleeper and ... well you get the point.

If I was closer to you I would offer to do the work but I am in Nova Scotia...

I got set up to polish the parts on my Norton last winter during it's rebuild. As the others have said it's easy if you have a buffing/polishing wheel.

I agree with LAB. Much more fun and satisfying to polish yourself. It is very easy with an electric drill and polishing kit. But be warned, it is a VERY messy operation so no way you want to do it in your house. I've got aluminum and wax dust all over my garage!! Can you rent shop space somewhere? Alternatively, leave the polishing until you are in the middle of a hot prairie summer and do it outside in the neighbour's yard

Biker-man, I'm in Annapolis Royal. You wouldn't happen to be the guy with the beautiful black Commando that was at the wharf rat ralley?

Nate-c, I haven't forgotten about sending some pics. Been so busy with the new baby I hardly have any time. Still got some work to do to get it back in one piece (only a day or two's worth of work).

caspermj - yes thats me, did you have your Norton there?

Good to see there is a forum member from Hfx as well...

No, I didn't. Still some things to get done before I'm riding it. If you're ever going to be in the area send me an email and drop in to see it. I'd love to have another look at yours as well. I've had your Norton as the wallpaper on my cellphone since the ralley :)

ps. sorry for hijacking this thread!

Coco: If your case is not too bad, you can tidy it up by hand with wet & dry sandpaper. Start with 600 grit and work up to 2000. Finish off with "Autosol" metal polish, which takes off the oxidation and leaves a protective film.
To the guys in NS: I'm from Hants Co, but living in New Zealand now. Great day for a ride on the commando today, 20 deg C & sunny - eat your hearts out!

Caspermj - Glad you liked my bike, I spent all last winter rebuilding it... It won 1st for best stock bike at the ralley! Not bad for an vintage Norton among 4000+ bikes there! I would like to see yours & will send you an E-Mail sometime...

Parker - good to see someone has nice biking weather! It will be a long wait for that here in N.S.....

fastback, I though for sure Walridge has the seat foam for sale seperately. Custom Chrome here in Regina has been out of busines for a while now as well, but I appreciate the effort in looking for me.

Found one! It is a local semi truck glamourizing joint so I am good to go.
