SteveA,

No John, Maxton are not ever going to be cheap :D

I see looking at some old threads that you know Chris Tyler. Chris offered me a Rickman Norton to ride this year that actually has a Commando front end on it! We had a few issues with the motor in it so I ended up following a somewhat different path in my return to racing this year after a 30 year break, including a 250 stroker and a later multi, but hopefully next year these problems will be solved and I will give it a run. Last year I paraded on Chris' Mk4 Seeley and on a PR replica Commando.

I have never suggested Maxton parts are cheap compared to standard, and having paid £400 for a pair of shocks earlier this year, this is something I have direct experience of.

Are you sure they were Genuine Maxton?, my custom made rear shocks cost me nearer £500!

But you did, You said little cost compared to standard parts. check back on this post.

Maybe you are the one who needs to check? I have little need for suspension parts to fit a Rickman Norton as I dont own one!

I shall be going to see to Richard at Maxton early next year to do some further development work relating to the shocks that they made for me, and will check whether or not they are genuine of not then.................lol

Joe,

A follow up..... Finally recieved the replacement but it also has further issues of quality as well. Neither one is really up to snuff as it should be as there are clear defects in workmanship. I Sent you and Ella an email explaining the q.c. problems.

"ORIGINAL" can ONLY mean what was on the bike when it left the factory.

"OEM replacement part" is what the factories originally produced as spares while Norton was still in business.

"NOS" (New Original Stock/Spares) are leftover OEM bits; they're what is getting harder and harder to find, and easier to fake.

After that, anything goes, apparently.

I think you've got this spot on. The vast majority of parts available in 2012 are aftermarket. The key is to find a reputable dealer/supplier who has the experience to distinguish between the quality made aftermarket products and the crap.

Actually it's pretty easy. Just find a dealer who supplies Andover parts.

The debate over what is now classified as genuine Norton is interesting but making parts from factory drawings does not make an item genuine ?

i know some of the UK & European manufacturers who currently make parts for Andover Norton , they also supply other UK retailers with exactly the same components
often from the same production run (Andover make bold claims to being the only source for Genuine Norton parts ) when they are using the same supply pool as most of the independent dealers

The real truth is most of the traditional parts suppliers some of who made parts for the actual Norton factory have now been forced to supply a wider customer base
as Andover Nortons order volumes declined , i guess giving up their distributor status and becoming an active retailer ( in direct competition with their own trade customer base ) prompted the independent dealers to re source and develop their own parts

reading this thread Andover have a real beef with their fellow retailers selling Norton parts ( when they have actually created teir own competition ) more suppliers means more availability and choice keeping Nortons rolling , I cock my hat to these guys for stepping up to the plate and investing

I don't think that you're being entirely fair to Andover as they don't undercut their dealers. The fact is that in many parts of the world and large parts of the UK, there simply aren't any dealers stocking Andover (or any other Norton) parts any more. This would leave buyers in Britain at least generally in the hands of the big two. I don't think it's libellous to say that they have been sourcing parts all over for at least thirty years, probably originally in response to a serious lack of newly manufactured parts from official sources.

Unfortunately, as the competition has dried up, the business seems to have become even more cut-throat . I try to support dealers that I can call in on but if I have to mail-order then I'm very glad that there is a friendy alternative to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (which has sired a Pit-Bull so the future doesn't seem too hopeful) :? .

It could be said that the only "Genuine Norton Factory Parts" in current production come from a shed in Donington.

I think myself very lucky. I ride a Commando to work & another at weekends.
Why? Because I am confident that if I need parts, I can pick up the phone & order new parts that fit.
Admittedly, a few parts are unavailable, such as rear speedo drive & handlebar switches, but nearly all is.
Of all the Andover Norton parts bought, they have all fitted properly.

As for me, I'm just happy that there are people out there who produce the parts that I need to keep my machines on the road. We can quibble about quality, but at the end of the day the alternative (no replacement parts at all) is a dismal one indeed.

Even if some of those parts were poorly made from substandard quality materials and perhaps even potentially lethal?
