I'm in the process of starting to re-build what I think is an AMC Norton Commando gearbox. The number stamped on the main casing is 319667M. Is there any way of finding out what year and model the gearbox is from ?

A Commando with numbers 319667 would be a for an 850 Commando, pre Mk3,
so somewhere (approx) in 1974 and for a Mk2 or Mk 2A 850,
since the gearbox would have had a matching number to the engine number and red plate.

There has been previous discussion here that the meaning or significance of the letter after the number
has been lost in the mists of time. In this case an M - there are other letters, just as mysterious - who knows ??
hopethishelps.

Hello Rohan - Many thanks for the information which will be very helpful during the re-build process, especially identification and ordering of parts.

If you haven't already done so, you might wanna contact Mick Hemmings and by his transmission rebuild DVD. That and his engine build DVD are must have's in my book!
