I have reason to believe that the engine mounting plates on my MKII are bent. I'm thinking that the way to check that is to somehow check parallelism between the engine crankshaft and the gearbox mainshaft. If they're parallel then the cradle must be straight.

Anybody have a suggestion for doing that?

Try a straight edge (steel rule) along each plate. To check for parallelism I would think you'll need some expensive kit.
What's the problem anyway?
