Gear Selector Problem

Every so often I change up into second (which works fine) and find I can't get another gear either up or down, gear lever moves but seems to have "lost" the selection mechanism.
If I roll the throttle off and back on it all seems to sort itself out.

The quicker the change into second the more likely it will happen.

No mechanical noises, jumping out of gear or anything else.

Any ideas?

Then the ratchet spring may need re-setting? http://www.oldbritts.com/gearbox_a.html ="Inside the outer cover --"
Or the ratchet mechanism could be worn?
If the spring is already some years old, then it's usually a worthwhile job to replace it-if the outer cover has to be removed for any reason, as they break occasionally-which leaves the box stuck in whichever gear it happens to be in when it breaks!

If you go on a long trip-carry a spare!

The other thing you might have to check is the shaft on the camplate. They have been known to come loose on the earlier bikes. Means removing it and brazing or welding it in place. But it might not be that.

Another related possibility is missing teeth on the quadrant or camplate shaft--hindering travel between the camplate detents unless driveline lash shocks it into the next notch.

Thanks for feedback.

Looks like minimum is get the outer cover off and have a look so I'll get a new spring and gaskets to have on standby and see what I find.

If there's anything interesting will post pics.

Cheers
