Thank you Bill, as usual you have been most helpful. With a bit of luck I might get the engine running on this trip. I have posted a few photos in my old G15 Project thread and will post more within the next week or so.

Bill, I wonder if I could yet again impose on you and ask what is the width of the spacer between the rear brake drum and the swingarm on the left side of the bike and the spacer between the speedo drive and the swingarm on the right side. Many thanks.

Sorry Dave, I've been pretty busy.

The brake side spacer, 03-0017, is 13/16ID, 1-1/4OD and .672 long.

The speedo side spacer, 03-0013, I don't have the dimensions on, but measuring with a caliper, its 1"OD and 1-1/16 long.

Please don't apologise Bill, I assumed you hadn't seen my post and I am yet again indebted to you. I hope to have the engine fired up on this trip. The rear spacers that came with the project seem to be a mix of Commando and other models.

Bill love what you have done.

Was the crank link a single or double?

Is it fitted with 2 links or rivetted into the chain?

It is not good to put a new crank link in even a slightly worn chain so
if you count the pins in your chain I will gladly send you an iwis with the
crank correctly fitted.

The crank link I got was a double, and the chain had less than a hundred miles on it when I added the crank link. The setup the bike came with just did not work with an even number of links, hence the crank link.

Bill, do you happen to recall how many links your chain was? I need to bring one with me the next time I am in the U.S. and don't want to bring more than I need.

I started with a 98-link chain, but was able to shorten it to 97 with that cranked link. I think the shortest universal modern chain is 110 link, so you should be fine.

The problem when using chains without a cranked link where the drive was designed
with one is that it becomes very difficult if nigh on impossible to get the tension right
between the gearbox and the rear drive.

This is more of a problem in USA and OZ as the vast majority of chain is Jap and cranked
links are just not available.

Ask around for 10B-1 (most rears) and 08B-1 (most primary) and crank links then become
available....OK you will more than likely get sold crap but it will fit.

I have recently sold several chains to NZ where a few lads got together to reduce carriage
costs, in fact one said that even with the shipping the chain was cheaper and better than
he could source.

I had one years ago. (wish I still had it) but yes the CSR is stamped into the cases.

G15s had 97 link chains, however some years had 98 link.

I always say take longer with a crank included as you never know
what previous owners have done. Also a factory if the builder ran
out of sprockets they would go to the next bin and fit whatever.

This also applied to primary drives where often the gearing was
different for sidecars.

The bike has the 2.4 gallon tank with the pins on the back for elastic mounting.
The bars are about a 12" rise and look like the ape hangers I've seen pics of for the last batch of CSRs.
The chain guard is chrome
The rear fender looks like a MkII rear fender, but slightly bobbed at the back like the Ranger rear fender. There's a reinforced hole with a bolt through it that attaches to the tab on the back of the seat. The fender is made up of perhaps 8 separate pieces of steel - the main part is two pieces, lapped under the edge of the seat and spot welded. There are small brackets on each side with a bolt and acorn nut, and seem meant to mount lifting handles and tie the fender to the top of the frame near the shock mount. There's a channel spot-welded to the underside to route the tail light wires. There are a pair of small tabs on the top of the fender, under the seat, also apparently to hold wiring in place. There are a pair of tabs near the front of the fender, broken off, which seem to be meant to attach small brackets to mount the front of the fender to the frame. There's a bracket on the top of the fender near the front, similar to the rear bracket on a Commando fender, which fits over a cross tube on the frame and is held in place with two nuts, bolts and washers. The entire assembly was chromed, and the overall shape is pretty complex: beaded edge - except for the bobbed back - shaped to fit around the chain guard and the shocks, reinforcing plates at the main mounting points.
