Fuel tank cap query

I'm looking at buying a new fuel cap - existing one has scratches that won't polish out.
I know, I know - anal retentive, etc, etc
My question, that hopefully some can answer is: Is the 60% premium (32GBP) for the Andover item (78.17) over the "same" RGM item (45.90) justified in terms of quality?
I like nice "stuff" but am not fond of throwing money away. Is the Andover item actually better quality than the RGM item?
Any thoughts?
Cheers

PS: same item is $159CAD from British Cycle (91GBP)

Some chrome shops will replate pot metal. Where I live, one shop does a very nice job. Prices used to be about the same as buying new.

I recently bought a replacement Ceadness cap from RGM to replace my original Norton factory fitted Ceadness Interstate cap which got damaged by a painter. When fitted the new cap opened up too far back and came in contact with the paint work.

Also the replacement Ceadness cap compared to the original is less well made and finished, it has rough edges on the casting and the screw that secures the rubber sealing washer and plate is way too small a diameter for the orifice. This cap sort of resembles a badly made Chinese item.

Wish I'd payed the extra and bought the AN one, (which if you study the photo on their parts website) is evidently not the same as Ceadness.
AN seldom sell junk...

Difficult to believe an RGM Ceandess would be different from an AN Ceandess.
At the risk of pointing out the obvious:
Maybe your RGM version is Chinese.
Maybe the Ceandess quality varies from batch to batch.
Maybe the Ceandess quality is lower than it used to be.

Sorry if I misled you.
The AN cap appears NOT to be Ceadness , here's a link to their website:-

Maybe Ceadness are made in China or India, who knows...

I'm pretty sure they're both the same cap (Ceandess Wolverhampton as fitted originally).

I've had them from Wassell, RGM, and AN. They have all been the same to include the way too stiff leaf spring. If any are not actually Ceandess, the counter fitter is doing an excellent job! With such a small market, I can't imagine anyone counter fitting them.

On their web site, Ceandess says: "Made to Order". In British speak, I think that means they don't normally stock them but make batches when ordered - just guessing. In American speak it would mean made to your specifications.

Can't quite see what you're referring to.
What is it about the AN offering that makes you think it's not Ceandess?
I don't see a difference in profile

Greg,

plenty counterfeit Indian manufactured caps on ebay, here's one that looks just the same as my RGM 'Ceadness' cap right down to the poorly fitting locking tab.
Cheap at only £15 including free international shipping.

counterfeit cap

It's not such a small market for those caps, back in the seventies Jaguar, Lotus, TVR, Morgan and Triumph used those as well.

For example here's a genuine Ceadness Lotus locking cap version for $224

Ceadness locking cap Lotus

And here's a similar Norton 'Ceadness' cap from RGM for $82

RGM 'Ceadness' locking cap

Less than half price from RGM, go figure....

How much resellers jack up the price of an article doesn't prove anything. If you're looking for the genuine article, you have to look at the packing, the stamping, or request a certificate of origin.

Rob,

On my original Ceadness cap the top part from the locking tab back to the rear hinge is flush, the AN cap is sort of sculpted out a bit.
Please open this link to AN:-

I've seen those caps fitted to Commandos at various NOC rallies, you can easily see the difference with the bikes parked side by side.

Hope this helps

Yes you are absolutely correct !

But if I wanted to make a fast buck and counterfeit genuine Ceandess caps I might buy cheapo caps from India and fit them with a Ceandess refurb kit complete with the stamping under the cap.
Not many folk would spot the difference.

As well as a poor cheapo finish compared to the original , I think a bit of a give away with my replacement cap was that the large plain washer that normally fits on the screw securing the sealing disc was missing.
Only a spring washer was fitted which didn't hold the disc properly.
Maybe the plain washer was omitted because the screw was a tad too short to properly fit into counterfeit cap?

Does any one else have a box under their garage bench for badly made/ counterfeit junk?

Thanks - can see what you mean.
There is a sculpted groove down the middle of the AN item - which, I note, the Ceandess item doesn't have.
I wonder where AN get theirs from?

Well - that's really strange!
Ceandess have confirmed they have been unable to update their website and all chrome Presto 75 (vented and unvented) are GBP114.99
Simon has confirmed AN item is Ceandess - 78.17GBP
Have just purchased the RGM item (also Ceandess) at 45.90GBP
Go figure!
Cheers
