About to re-assemble gearbox with new bushings and am wondering about the grooves slotted into the threaded end of the fork selector spindle. Any other purpose other then pressure relief and/or oil to the chain? Is it necessary? The only result on my machine is oil up my backside.

No grooves on any I've ever seen. I always seal the thread with something as it weeps a bit as standard.

Here's the issue:

Such grooves are normal seen on threads to allow any build up of rust dirt etc somewhere to escape into so they don't damage the thread when being screwed on or off. Think of them like the flutes on a drill or tap that clear the swarf. Check carefully the thread in gearbox case as it may have been used to dress up a damaged thread. Some sealant may be need as it may lead to an oil leak.

Thanks all. The only issue was the slight oil leak and as such, I'll seal it and put it back in. The spindle is fine except for teh leak.

There is no reason in tranny to have that long spindle's threads grooved so likely it was done to chase threads somewhere else then installed in tranny with oil paths to outside.

I agree, a thread chaser.
Old Britts has a drawer full of used ones for $11 a piece.

Cheaper to replace than to have to pull the gearbox down again to fix a oil leak, I can't see no reason why someone would have done that.

No kidding keep the nicely grooved one as flat base thread chaser and get another so its all your own fault if leaks occur in tranny or other similar threaded holes. Only other reason I can think up is an attempt to keep the nut tight w/o loctite or exceeding factory torque levels enough like I learned to do yet still find over tightened things not all that tight later on > crank to drive train, [except the my lightly tightened big drive sprocket nut locked in place by a factory gizmo.
BTW what other holes on Commandos would that slotting spindle threads match?
