fork seals.

I am doing the fork seals on my TR5T 1973. forks are out, I cannot get the old seals out with the stantions in, the recessed bolt at the bottom was extremely tight but I have managed to get it turning, but now the rod inside is turning as well. tried many sockets down the stantion but nothing locks on. I have read that sometimes a 1/2inch copper pipe can lock onto the stud. any ideas please. on either getting seal out without stripping completely or stripping out. N

Did you try 13/16" which probably needs to be a 3/8" square drive socket as a 1/2" drive socket probably won't fit into the stanchion unless machined?

Also, the damper tube should have two notches that a flat (wide impact driver bit etc.) or flattened/filed/ground rod will fit into.

My damper holding tool. Wide (not quite wide enough but does hold the damper-just) impact driver bit and holder, 1/2" sq. dr. extensions as required and T handle.

Something that can work is to refit the fork spring and 'cap nut', then compress the fork as much as possible (fit back into the yokes then compress with ratchet straps?) so the spring compression applies friction to the damper assembly then 'shock' the slider bolt to unscrew.

thanks LAB. I made a tool in the end, double ended it with a shaped tool for getting the seals out as well. tried the spring compressor, didn't think of 3/8 drive. but just going to fit the forks back in now. cheers N
