Well, I changed the fork oil on my 70 Roadster today and everything went well until I tried bolting everything up and the right nut that sits on top of everything just won't tighten up, it goes on a couple threads then gets very tight and starts to cross thread so I don't go any further not wanting to make matters worse.

Is there something that could have come lose at the bottom of the fork preventing the assembly from screwing in? The left one went in fine. It's the chrome nut that sits on top of everything, including the instruments. Thanks for any insight. feliz.

Getting the start right is important when there is presure on the parts. It takes strong hands you need to hold the pieces tight to one another and turn them anti clockwise very slowly. This is done till you feel the begining of the two theads drop into one another. This is a very slight drop in and is easy to miss. Once you have found it you may try for a clocwise turn. Because you have already cross theaded the parts you will need to proceed very slowly moving it back and forth as if you were tapping the hole. Stop now and clean away any stuff on the threads and get some clean assembly grease on the pieces. norbsa

Possibly it might be better to remove the spring and try working the parts together without having to fight against the spring pressure?
