I love that clip too, but in reality when you're racing you have to beat the other rider / driver, not just their machine, right. Shoot just look at the thread here about the old triumph 500 and the go fast boyz from the shed who went to the Belgian grand prix and gave the big factory guys a run for their money.
You would not want to be doing that. The Paton 500 was not fast for a very long time. I don't think Percy Tait had any brains. It is possible to get a Triumph 500 going very fast, but it would be the nastiest bike in creation. 'Torque wins races;'.

Naa, couse he had no brains, that's why he won the Thuxton 500 miler with his co rider on a 650 Bonneville.

Here you go again reminding everyone what a s**t heap your 500 Triumph twin was, when Tait finished 2nd at the Spa Belgian 500 GP behind Agostini, finishing aheard of all the rest of the field bar the MV.
Someone somewhere could actually do that, oh! And also it was actually a 500 Triumph twin that won the Daytona 200.
Why couldn't yours do that?
 
Sure the phrase ‘torque wins races‘ has merit.

Meaning, if you take two identical bikes and give one 2bhp more leak power and one heaps more mid range, then the torquey one will win.

But the phrase has limits. If it was wholly true, why didn’t Harley win more open playing field racing? Well, in part cos they just didn’t make enough power.

And why did 350 Yams with NO mid range wipe the floor with torque monster Commandos?
Cos they had more power.

You forget that the yank AmA for years made the rules for races like Daytona in favour of the H/Ds, banning twin ohcs like Manxs, this eventually got over taken by improved technology. It was Doug Hele and the Triumph 500 that blew the rule book wide open.

I’m not sure what I forgot. I said ’why didn’t HD win more open playing field racing? Meaning, it wasn’t an open field for many years, the rules were in their favour on home turf and that’s the only reason they won, and why we didn’t see ‘em winning elsewhere....

The 350 Tzs only produced 60- 65 gee- gees but weighed 250lbs also were from the ground up, full blown race winning GP racers, and designed for that one purpose. Commando was just the opposite, a road going machine playing at being a racer.

Exactly!

So they had a high power to weight ratio, more real life RWHP than most Commandos, and almost zero ‘torque’ ... and won.

Hence my point.
