Ok, here you guys go. It moves under it's own power. Happy now?

No I'm not going to go any farther with an unregistered bike, no helmet and no brakes. Did I mention the 40 yr old tires? So that's all you get.

Yes, it starts first kick (warm) and I'm off to the side on the center stand as your shin hits the shifter and without protection I wasn't about to put another gash in my leg.

I'm just bummed my dad wasn't here to see it.

Way to go Dave. Another one ready for the road.

Outstanding, dave.
Those pipes blued up rather quickly. Check for over advanced timing or lean condition.
That being said, we'll be looking for that ass layden avitar as promised.

Congrats, Dave. That's a major milestone for sure. Soon you'll have it on the road for real. :)

Don't know about those riding gloves though.

I still need to dial in the timing and carbs but I think I'm close. I can get it to start easily and now have it idling nicely too. A good steady 1000-1100rpm idle and I know I can get it better than that.

We all love it when another Commando mechanic gets his wings.
So where will you look next time a 1st kick don't start er when warm and ready?
Boil the carb in vinegar for 10 min then diddle float level so 1.5 turns of pilot screw give most pleasing stable idle. Then fudge pilot in a tad to slightly weaken idle.
Keep eye on brake fluid for a few gas fill ups. Check primary slack chain when hot.
Keep mind on surroundings as much as the thrill between your legs.

Oh, I'll have a whole hit list.

You mean belt.

Nice idle Dave. I also love it how the motor instantly returns to idle instead of the gizmo that they put on everything these days that make it slowly go back to idle to reduce emissions. But then they have to do it for our environment, we have the option not to with these antiques.

Lovely sound set at road use 1000-1100 idle to avoid embarrassing stall outs at intersections. Here's what I aim for at home and when strangers around.
Should idle till runs out of gas or voltage to fire plugs. Nortons don't make much heat till you put some fuel to them.

I love to easy lope along just over lugging listening to all the tickles and power puffs.
When I do this near dark Cdo gets dived bombed by bats. Don't know if its a challenge or matting sound they are responding too. When I wrapped headers with insulation they came around even thicker entangling in control cables.

Just think of what adventure and delights are now in store for you.

Only hobot would have bats coming after him. Why am I surprised?

Well done Swoosh, great to see and to hear the fruits of your labor. You've done a realy good job & I'm sure when it's all sorted out you will have a very solid ride. Congrads!! Glenn.

I use to get my 850 to idle like that, maybe 750-850rpm, been a while. Pretty easy to do with a single Mukuni. With the 750 Combat I'll probably keep the revs up a little. Although even in the little test ride it pulled just fine from idle. I was surprised while it was just loping along that you could tell that it just wanted to get up and go. And go. It was like walking a thoroughbred, it was ready to run.

Dave let us know how the first open road ride feels for you, big grins I'm sure. there is nothing finer than a well sorted commando riding down the road.

"The kill button works"

hee hee

Good to see it running, i need to check your other thread and see what the heck you did/didn't do to sort your ignition troubles.

Glad you proved me wrong, believe it or not. The other thread will tell the tale.

Don't be lugging it on any more test rides. Get it out there and wind it up properly and seat those rings or you'll regret not doing so.

Great
Dave, you're an inspiration for others in the retoration phase who follow your build that it can be done!
They just need to avoid reading the thread on the Boyer, that was a trial for sure. :(
