I've had it out about 3 times now with no problems with the idle, and no droop coming off idle. I'm thinking I've got the carbs dialed in finally. How good does it get? Give me about 4 or 6 more runs and if it holds, I'm thinking I may be able to take my hand off the throttle. I probably should have done the sleeved slides rather than the anodized ones, but here I am. We'll see how long it lasts. It's never idled this good, even when I got it at 4K miles. The transition between acceleration and throttle down is better too, I notice it in the hills, there used to be a flat spot coming off the throttle at the top of the hill, and giving it throttle coming off a coast, not that it did anything bad, I just noticed it.

Beautiful day for a ride today, CA weather, high 69F, 20.5C and low humidity, probably the last one here for a while.

Dave, knowing you are a traditionalist, are you still running points and spring auto advance mechanism?

reason I am asking is a lot of people say EI, especially the new digitals, is superior to points in a nice even idle

but knowing you, I am sure you have your points set perfectly! (if you have them)

No, my AAU was so worn I couldn't even set the point gap at a stand still. Pazon SureFire. Works great. I think it helped a lot with the idle too.

AHA!

The transition from clapped out points to a decent EI is always a noticeable one.

I was going to ask, if you could remember, to list the various carb settings you tried before hitting on the right nick. I did that with my ZRX after I modified the airbox and installed a big free-flow air filter; it took seven tuning steps before I hit the setup. That's seven times four (carbs), plus removing tank and futzing with the 4 rubber booties every time; those two inner booties are a royal pain...

It was mostly a matter of diddling with the idle pilot screws, getting it in the sweet spot and then turning it in just a bit to make it slightly rich. Time will tell if it holds.

It would be nice to put a manifold gauge on it, but I'm pretty sure the slides are balanced as far as WOT at the top and also coming down to the bottom, hitting the idle stop screws.
