users to advertise. Seems like a good idea.

I think this is a great idea. Put in a common thread secton for users to see.
I am not picking sides and have bought stuff from both which I am very pleased with.
But I don't need another pissing contest started.
You advertise you pay. And it should go to the greater good of keeping the forum alive. We have advertizements in our ONO Newsletters and our CVMG.
Britbike.dot com has ads at the very top of its banner showing off who makes or sells what.
I am trying to be neutral here.
I am Not sitting on the fence but would like to see some showing of products that can keep a 50 year old Norton alive or make it better.
Am I on the right track here???? I think Jerry is!

Have a great New Year.
Cheers.

There's a 'For Sale' section where users can sell stuff, but no vendor section. Another forum i participate in has a vendor section where vendors pay for the privilege of hawking their goods. Not sure about that, but it'd be good to have their products shared. Basic rules are vendors can't bad mouth other vendor products. Think there is service though in the community pointing out "things"

It would also be nice to see for sale items in 'New posts', but that may just be me

Interestingly, after the little dustup in Matt's thread, I wondered if JS was right.

I've always be careful to not advertise, especially in this forum. Less so in the pub. I never actually read the rules before this morning.

By the rules, Matt did nothing at all wrong - there are content rules, but they have nothing to do with informing the community of price changes and/or special deals. In fact, full-blown advertising posts are not outlawed. Please see the rules at the bottom right on this page!

That said, I hope Jerry does put up a vendor forum and I'm fine with him charging for it within reason - I told him that quite a while back. The current classifies don't really work. The previous version was better, but Jerry changed for good reason.

I will repeat what I’ve said before…

Posts that support the Norton community are surely what this forum is for.

Learning about new products, being informed about changes to products or prices, etc is all part of supporting the community.

I have learnt SO MUCH from this forum, and have happily bought from Matt and Jim and others as a result thanks to this forum broadening my knowledge as to what was available.

So, I honestly fail to see the issue. I‘d like to know how many of us are in any way offended by such posts? There are many pointless, meandering posts on this forum (as on any forum), many posts that simply wouldn’t be posted if the OP had simply glanced at the workshop manual, etc. yet now we seek to ban posts that are actually useful to people.

I. Just. Don’t. Get. It.

Jim, you’re upset because you’ve been told off in the past, but that’s becasue you were (however unintentionally) slagging off others, and posting ‘info-tisements’ ie posts posing as informative that were really adverts. And it is quite right that such posts are frowned upon.

That’s not at all what Matt did. Letting people know that a long awaited batch is going to be ready… about price changes or special offers… about new products… etc is all perfectly fine in my book and honestly, if we feel that such content needs to be ‘banned’ then I ask you - what the f*ck is the forum for ?!?

Jerry, please do not knee jerk react to utterly unnecessary protestations from people and unwittingly further degrade this great forum.

I have been on this forum for quite some time and really don’t want to see ads popping up.The resource list different vendors with their website or contact information.Personally I was thrilled when I first found this forum and got to see what others have done and could get answers to any questions I might have without any pissing contests. There are always different viewpoints but you can sort them out just move on.
Just my 2 cents.

My problem is the actual products amongst other things. Some are good and some are bad products. Advertising a bad product is a bad idea. Users of the forum here who are new to these bikes could easily be mis led. I dunno. Jim you did it again, somehow you always piss everyone off. Damn! You are an expert at this for sure. It’s a fine line.

Right now I am in the middle of NZ South Island with very poor internet connection, so I am not able to do much.

All I can think of is to allow users to advertise their stuff along with a disclaimer at the top of a new forum. They will have to pay for this I suppose.

I have always managed the forum users and reacted based upon complaints. Again I am getting lots of complaints. Not Matt’s fault in my opinion,

I am open to ideas on how to deal with this situation. What do you think about a forum just to advertise products? Perhaps I could make enough to cover expenses to then remove the annoying banners.

For now please keep this civil and PM me or post here your thoughts.

There will not be users ads popping up. Only way it would happen is if there is another forum dedicated to products (unlikely). That way it’s users choice to go to it or not. Like I said above though, how can I control / monitor users advertising crap products. It should not be my decision or Les’s. That’s why I don’t like the idea. I for one should not be one to decide if a product is good or bad. I do know Matt has good products, Kenny does etc.

I was not offended by Matt’s post.

I feel like already enough energy has been wasted on this. Let’s move on.

I'm really new to this forum, first forum for me ( I dumped the BMW car forums years ago for the usual forum reasons) but from what I've read so far, there has been great discussions and evaluations on the products available for our bikes. In effect, good and bad products have been discussed in a healthy, informative manner that allows us to make the best decisions for our needs.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it............

FWIW, I was not bothered by Matt's offerings or by JS. Rarely can afford either but I have purchased from both. Even if I am not in the market I am definitely interested in hearing about anything on offer as long as it worthwhile. How that is decided I don't know so I can see this is a black hole.

The issue isn't vendors posting about their products, IMHO, we've had lots of that over the years (see new fullauto heads, CNC barrels, Pender's oil pressure switch, Greg Marsh's amal inventory, etc.).

Jim, you've posted several threads announcing your products without any issue, and I've bought from you as a result.

I agree with Eddie and others that the problem is when you let ego take over and start a pissing contest. This is not something a "vendors forum" will solve.

I for one will likely never visit a vendor board, so I hope any rule changes don't foreclose on a vendor's ability to post here.

My main point is just don't be a dick and we can carry on without issue

Just my .02 cents:

I don't check CNW, NYC Norton, JS Motorsport, or even Greg Marsh's webpage for updates or new products. I find no problem with these guys posting new products or update information on this site. It's a benifit for all concerned, and makes it easy on me. I have bought from all of the above and have been very happy with every purchase. I have spoken to most and and had correspondence with all of them and it was always a pleasurable experience. Any one who has been on this site for a period of time knows who the quality players are, and everyone I mentioned is on the list.

Just PLEASE keep the negative comments and bullshit out. I won't point fingers but it's pretty obivious where and how it starts. The combined talent of this group is amazing and it would be a shame to diminish it with useless bickering.

Yes, the attempted subliminal stuff was quite annoying.

Straight forward " I have this product for this much money" is just fine, helpful in fact.

By the way, my newly designed power enhancing key fobs are almost ready. Only $799 and I'll throw in " Win with Worntorn" tank decals.

Never drink and derive.

Apparently, I missed the violence and bloodshed.

Nothing said (typed) in any forum I've ever been in anywhere has had any impact on my life. I've been told it would by individuals I may not agree with, but it never happens.

Anyway, there's a community?

This thread is just another tune up between tolerant and intelligent members of the “community“. It’s not an unhealthy thing. Lots of wisdom from lots of people here. It’ll move on.

Well.....an identified advertising area I can choose to look at or ignore.....yeah! I could go for that...

.....as compared to say 'Meta' allowing all kinds of arseholes advertising shit to me that I don't want, just when I don't want it....normally just when I am looking for something else....and then not giving up when I say I don't want it....and advertising more shit at me. (yes, I know that is the price of the 'free' service they provide!!)

Of course, by paying VIP here I am already choosing to avoid a layer of advertising carried on this forum to those who don't pay, but again it's mainly advertising for stuff I don't want....I guess....remember...I don't see it!

So yeah! I wouldn't have a problem with something I could choose to ignore or delve into and look around for Norton related stuff I might need!
