i have been away from the forum for some time, working on another, um, brand. But now it is time to start my 1970. Still gathering parts and need a fuel tank ( I need an engine also(!)) Saw the EnfieldCounty fuel tanks on flea bay. I am looking for comments good or bad.
Kurt

PS: I have two engines that are stuck and would sure like to make some sort of deal for just one that works! Let me know.

Dunno about the ones from Enfield County, but I got one from Parts Paradise 51
ebay number 290836075277.
Apart from one front mounting box section being slightly higher one side (easily rectified with another rubber washer) it's very good.
I pressure tested it , then left it full of fuel over night, and all was good.
All threads are fine, and a genuine British Ceandess cap fits great.
It was delivered in 5 days, with no import tax, as the stated value was GB£ 15.
Can't fault the deal.

I bought one knowing in advance that I was keeping it rather than eat $100 shipping. I'm building a rat/bitsa style commando, no concern with correct part style restoration.
To cut right to the chase, biggest piece of crap I've ever bought off eBay. Not even shaped like a Commando tank (sorta, kinda, not really). much more boxy/rectangular. Rusty ,outside coated, inside flakes coarse enough to flake off with a screwdriver. Welding slag and metal debris rattling around inside. Soaked it in phosphoric acid solution about a week to remove rust and then pressure tested it. Nine leaks, all on welded seams, metal VERY THIN where they ground the welds smooth. Brazed most of the seams below and a couple spots topside. Third try got it to hold air.
Surfaces wavy/rippled. About nine thick coats of primer and wet sand with 320grit, looks about ready for the top coat (flat black ,so not as critical as a 'real' paint job). Haven't even tried gas cap fit, looks like it could be OK.
After all is done I'm still going to use tank liner, guess I could have saved a lot of trouble and used my fiberglass tank.
Bottom line, if you are looking for a nice replacement Roadster tank you would not want the tank those thieves sent me, not even close for that purpose.
If you can weld and do body work... Otherwise spend the money with a reputable vendor and get something else.

Your results may vary.
EDIT: I bought the Enfield County tank that original post was asking about.

ace, you didn't mention which one you got, Enfield Country or Parts Paradise?

Dave

Thank goodness you held back your real feelings!!!
Appreciate your feedback, really helpful in preventing a less than fun event with the mailman. So...since this vendor did not deliver, where would you purchase a tank? I prefer a primered tank as I have the balance of the pieces that will need to be painted to match a tank. While I "think" I prefer metal I am open to all opinions and experiences.
Thanks!
Oh, and I am looking for a 750cc engine, that is the big void in my project at this point, a very big void!
Regards,
Kurt

Bought mine from partsparadise, Roadster tank and side panels. Both are excellent quality and seem to be made out of good quality steel. The tank i bought was in the bare metal but the side panels had been etch primed.
No import duty as valued only at £15, must be what they make them for.
Delivery took 10 days. Ive waited longer for stuff from 50 miles away not 1500 ish.
Get in quick I can see the prices going up very soon.

+1.

I bought a tank from Burton Bike Bits. The cap didnt work properly, it had a huge leak along the pinch weld, and was generally a POS! I sent it to someone to have a weld in cap installed and that turned into a nightmare of its own.

I'm thinking seriously about ordering one of the Partsparadise, only from the one good review. Someone talk me out of it.

Don't do it!

What's wrong with your tank?

It's fiberglass and I really don't want to do the sealing thing. I've been using avgas and wouldn't mind if I could go to a regular gas station if I needed to. The price is acceptable to me and when I see the Burton Bits one not nice for lots more.....

Dave,

there is two good reviews for the tanks from parts paradise, but it's your money so your decision.
I am happy with my tank.

How faithful is the Partsparadise Norton fuel tank to the original shape ?
There are posts elsewhere suggesting some of the other vender tanks for sale (hand formed and not pressed no doubt) are
not that good.
I noticed Partsparadise also offer a Interstate fuel tank which I am interested in for sure.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-NORTON-I ... 43b74d0a7f

I had never thought about this at the time but being in New Delhi last August could have been an opportunity to see first hand and maybe have made a direct purchase.

I haven't got an original Roadster tank to compare it with although I've had several in the past, but two mates with Roadsters came to look at the tank and both were impressed.
It all looks to be a good copy.
I did wonder to start with when I got it, but after pressure testing it, filling with fuel, and fitting the cap ,I can't fault it.
Be aware that several original versions of steel Interstate tank exist, I have two originals and the rear of the tunnels are significantly different , in that one has much more frame tube clearance kind of an upturned V whereas the other is much more rounded.
Maybe I just got lucky with the tank I got, but I am old enough to tell good from crap, and I certainly wouldn't give an item a good report if it was crap.
