I have electronic instruments on both commandos. I put them on the mk3 first. Back when i put the tach on the mk3 they did not send a resistor. The tach took out my trispark or the trispark took out the tach. Not sure which it was, but it was ok for about 500 miles. Make sure you put the resistor in between coil and tacho.

Otherwise perfect. About 10k on the mk3 and about 2k on the 750. No regrets. Nice to get rid of the cables. Thanks to Jims hydraulic clutch, all i have is throttle cables. So ride by wire for commando anyone lol

Thanks for the warning Jerry. If you can recall what kind of resistor it is that would be great and I will fit it. No mention of it on my Andover Tachometer instructions. I use Tri Spark too.
 
I cannot remember what size resistor. Ask Tom Kullen (Utahnorton).

Thanks. Will pursue this. When thinking about it all the instrument needs is a very low voltage signal to work. A coil point is the signal to the unit but does not need larger voltage. :?
 
This thread is just in time, my new to me 74 Mk2A needs new clocks too. For what it costs to repair a speedometer and tach I might as well get them.

Well the Speedo install instructions in the box are very interesting. It's a black and white photocopy of a color-coded chart. Not by words but by color. Not sure whether to laugh or cry. This little project is gonna take some time...
 
The new E- Speedo is lovely and in KMPH for Canada (and most countries ?). Andover followed up sending me Part 06.7904/E , a wire length with a screw in sensor to the speedo drive gearbox. Dead ended on this so what do I now order in and do regarding the sp.-dr. gearbox end of business ? What a project. :o
 
Iv'e been able to procure and maintain a large inventory of new Smiths electronic gauges in both MPH and KPH. I got tired of the back orders from the factory and buy more than I probably should to have what I need on the shelf. All the gauges I sell come with proper instructions with the correct wiring diagrams in color. I also have various speedo senders including a simple hall effect drive that is modified to screw on your existing stock Smiths gear drive. The tachometer picks up the signal from the coils. The correct resistor is included if you run a Tri-Spark. I have some new products that will be updated on the website soon including the classic Smiths Chronometric Revolator. This is a beautiful color speedometer that shows shifting points.

Simon of Andover tells me there is no need for a resistor inline for the tachometer. Also no need to rebuild the speedo drive gearbox , simply screw in the sensor end of 06.7904/E to the gearbox. Note that the rubber covering the protruding tip should remain in place, do not remove it. So I'll get to it. :)

I was talking to Comstock about the new instruments and he said that he had a problem calibrating his. He said that if he got the speed right the odometer was off and if he got the odometer right the speed was off. I guess that having the speed right is more important than knowing your mileage but it could mess you up if you go say 80 miles between gas stops and it reads low you might run out of gas at least once.

I have yet to calibrate the speedo. It needs a switch somewhere in-line to do it. Instructions seem rather pathetic for this side of the pond.. Unless the Brits speak another language ? Oh wait , they created English and the rest of have to decipher/interpret. Scrabble game is fun. :wink:

Legendary motorcycles gauges, I only use these on custom builds (genuine Smiths on resto's)
One of the things I like about the speedo is I dont have to run a speedo cable or any wiring to
the rear wheel. Speedo gives lots of info, even tells me i'm 753 ft above sea level.
The gauges are quite short in height , I was able to trim the alloy holders down to a height of 1-3/8".
I've purchased a second set for my next build.
Had no issues.
 
I have Smith electronic gauges on both of my CNW builds. I am, overall, happy with performance. Two issues prevent complete happiness. The LED readout for odometer and trip mileage is impossible to read in the daylight. Second, Matt at CNW had to add a button, which looks like a kill switch, to my handlebars to be able to toggle from odometer to trip meter, and the same button is used to zero the trip meter. I have not had this added to the second build, so I have no way to toggle to trip meter.
 
That toggle switch issue is quite annoying really. Considering that even the originals had a trip knob, I can't quite see why it's so difficult for the makers of the digital clocks to put a little knob in the same position.

Although, thinking about it, that might mean another half dozen wires to plumb in !!
 
I know I must be getting too old. When I go to an historic race meeting and see a Manx Norton wearing a Scitsu electronic tachometer, I don't want to be there any more.
