About this Motorcycle
1970 Norton Commando 750 , This is a super rare one of a kind custom race bike and you have the opportunity to own it! Ed Labelle was the owner, builder, and rider of this beautiful record holding Norton. He applied his trade from the 1940's until his recent passing. He is well known for his expertise with English machinery, and his former shop in West Philadelphia was like a Mecca to those fascinated by British style motorcycles. It also has polished and lightened valves, Venolia pistons, and Dunstall pipes. The spark is provided by a ARD mag and rare unobtainable Amal carbs. The oil bag is stock Norton. It has a dry clutch with a Norton racing gearbox. The front tire is a 2.75x19 Avon and the alloy wheel and brake have been taken from an old Motor Parilla. It also comes with a spare rear wheel with a 4 drag slick. The forks are Ceriani and include friction and hydraulic dampers for increased stability. The seat and fender are fiberglass. Race ready this bike weighs in at just over 300 pounds. Track times in the 1/4 mile are just above 12 seconds with a trap time of 112 on gas fuel. If anyone can post photos I'd like that too, see if it's the one I remember seeing in his shop way back when. Ed was a good guy, and could tell some wild stories about being Ed LaBelle on a friday night. Sorry to hear of his passing. Anyone out there remember his shop in Sharon Hill PA near the oil refineries, and that big white german shepard shop dog?
Good memories from better days.

Here ya go.

Ed Labelle 80grand '70 Commando

Thanks Pete...he must have kept that one hidden. I remember a Vincent named "The Smoker" he had set up for drag racing and what was probably an Atlas tucked away in a corner, but not this one. Ed was a great giuy, especially to a 17 year old kid who knew nothing about the clapped out Enfield Intercepetor he just bought. I did a google search and found out he's been gone since 2010. Damn.....guess I'm way out of touch.

Never timed Peel in her prime nor P!! but Peel left my upper 11s SV650 in the dust after 60-70 and would out pull moderns popping wheelies to enter a turn 1st closing in on 90 mph yet P!! was about a sec faster and pulled to way higher than SV650 or Peel. Only 2 bikes I could not stay on w/o the seat back catching me > Peel and P!!. I'm water skiier with great grip and upper body strength so was shocked - pleased at same time not being able to stay on bike by power alone till rpms topped out. So yep I'm geared for power to weight you must be a bit wise to pull trigger on, similar to Burt Munroe easing off with uninteded fish tailing to cut throttle an instant to realign with some rolling to get some grip that can actually take some PULL power. My middle names are Adrenalin Acceleration.

Thats sure a hefty price, unless its considered to be super famous and super fast ??
Think of a number, and quadruple it ?

Perhaps hobot could post this into his post, rather than all that untrimmed gibberish ?

Sorry about the email format, its all digital gibberish social disease to me. Glad someone found a photo to show it off. There's a few more photo's in the email but I'd have to put on my photobucket to display here. As cool and low slung and rigid rear as Ed rig is, remember a good factory weight Combat did 12.26 1/4.

My P!! was under 300# and Peel gotten below 350# and I don't weigh but 160-70 fully wraped up. Peel was last weighted @ 365# > before > factory foot stalks removed and 1/2 the exht. system removed and 1.2 ah battery fitted and belt drive and 520 thin tooth chain kit.

I have an impossible to find Norris RX. Anybody want it? Could greatly increase the value of your Commando! :)

I think Sir Eddy's Rocket (61 Norton Manxman) ran at least down in the 12 second bracket with a 650cc engine and monobloc carbs, and most of it's original cycle parts also. Maybe his son could dig up a few old time slips for us.

I used to talk to Ed Labelle about Nortons, he was always high priced on bikes and parts even before they were as collectible as they are now. He was a great rider with a long road racing career, one year a youngster hit him and put his Ducati down I think at a Daytona race and he lost parts of some fingers between his bike and the track, ground away, that is when he quit road racing.

Even old Manx Nortons with racing pedigrees from famous period riders only go for about half this much so this guy is nuts for sure. Ed Labelle did race a Manx Norton for a long time, where is it? He also set some records on a hopped up Vincent.

A cool bike if it is what it is advertised as, but civilization will have to hold steady for another 50 or so years before it is worth the asking price.

Speaking of 12 second quarters and Enfield Interceptors, I had a fellow in my shop looking at the bikes last week. He spotted the Commando and informed me that he had a stock Royal Enfield Interceptor that would easily wax a Commando thru the quarter.
He then claimed times of mid 12s for his Enfield and wanted me to agree with mid 14s for a Commando.
I have the 1970 big 7 test etched in my mind, (103 mph, 12.69 seconds, 1970 750S) , so I corrected him on his Commando numbers, but I have not really paid much attention to anything Enfield. Ive always liked the look of them, but have read that the Albion gearbox was archaic and slow, the engines leaky. My recollection was that the Interceptor was advertised as the first bike to get into the 13s, the Commando the first to get into the 12s.
After he left I found a road test for the Stage two 1969 Interceptor, 87mph quarter, 14.89 seconds. Zero to 100 in 23 seconds. The Commando can get from zero to 100 and back to zero plus have the side stand down in the time the Interceptor takes to reach 100mph!
Of course I have now printed the that test and the big 7 tests, all set for his next visit and BS session.

Glen

Like saying goes: "the older I get the faster I was" Enfield Interceptor "waxing" a Commando

Ed Labelle was a really a nice guy. I'm 65 ,but remember a summer night back in the early 1960's. I was with my dad buying Go Kart parts at a Sunoco station in southwest Philly. At the station were always guys hanging out with their souped up Harleys and Indians. One was boasting about how his Harley could beat Ed Labelle's Limey. After a short while who shows up in his leathers riding a Vincent? Ed Labelle .They all took off to somewhere near the airport to race. Naturally Labelle's Vincent stomped the guy on the Harley.Later at the gas station the guy's friends were busting his balls for the beating he just took........Skip

Ed sold his Manx to one of the duponts for 1500 including spares. His vincent bikes were sold to domiracer. I dont remember him missing fingers but broken arms and ribs. He was racing in his 60's. There's a magazine article about it out there somewhere.
I think everyone had a different perception of Ed, good or bad. He was a gifted machinist.
I remember gene aucott visiting for coffee and to talk about Vincents as if they were people. Better days.

Hey fellas, maybe the 'rare' Norris cam is not an RX, but the 'much rarer' Magnum 70......like I have ;-)

Whichever, it is a cam, someone copied it ;-)
