Ebay wars

I was having a poke through Ebay last week, found another tail light assembly up for grabs. Would you believe it...I forgot to put a bid on it @ the w/e. :roll:

Anyway...I dropped by there first thing today to see what it went for, as the bid ended Sunday evening...Turns out even if I'd placed a 'sensible' bid I'd be slapped silly, they'd have walked straight over me to get to the thing, lol.

The one I bought for the S type cost me about $70-$80, is in better condition.

What is the matter with these folk? Barking..Is an expression that springs to mind. :mrgreen:

I'm consistently "unsurprised" at the prices people are asking for on some of this crap, if you think that's bad check out the "custom" chopper bling. No wonder the Asia sellers are having a field day... anyway... which taillamp part do you need? I have a decent condition fairing I could sell you but the metal backing bracket is pooched and I'm keeping the lucas lens as a spare... pm me

I sold a half-dozen tail lights in much better condition, all in the $50 - $75 range, usually with only 1 bidder.

All it takes is two people NEEDING to have the same part at the same time, and the seller gets a bonus.

I find the big scam these days is shipping, usually from the USA. I'm not sure if it's an issue with USPS or sneaky sellers taking advantage of unsuspecting buyers. There was a guy in Florida listing norton stuff at reasonable purchase prices... but with shipping charges of upwards of $300

I always include a note regarding overseas shipping that I will refund the difference between my actual cost and the e-bay shipping charge. I've refunded at least a dozen charges, typically between $5 - $10 on flat-rate boxes that most parts fit in.

I recently shipped around 60lbs from Oregon to Ontario for like $160+. Couldn't believe it. Harder to estimate shipping when you get into larger items.

a brand new Lucas assembly will cost about 250 bucks from old Britts, even less with a replica lens . No comments

Our bathroom scale spends more time out in my shop than it does the bathroom. That, a measuring tape, and a few minutes is all it takes to know FOR SURE what the actual shipping charges will be.

Since I use the online account for FedEx, USPS and U.S.Postal, I get a discount from the counter price, that also helps a tiny bit.

I've found that FedEx ground is the cheapest way to ship engines and other heavy parts (under $1 a pound) UNLESS they fit in a U.S.Postal "flat rate" box. I once got 55 pounds of hardware and small bits in a medium size flat rate box, at the time, it was only like $8.

I've heard similar complaints from US sellers citing USPS rate increases as the culprit. Right now, it's cheaper to get stuff from the UK even with the extra week of delivery time...

US Postal costs increases because Lance Armstrong is not anymore delivering for them

Medium flat rate box 2 years ago was $8, now it's $16+

Rates have increased SUBSTANTIALLY!

I think it must be the "Frenzy" of the bidding process near the end of auction for that high selling price. 27 bids on it. I noticed w**5 bid on it quite a bit. Wondering if the winner of the auction has Buyer Remorse. :?:

Great price if you're the seller
Any item will sell for what people are willing to bid it up to.
If a seller starts his bid at a very low reasonable price and only expects to get market value with no intent of ripping anyone off, and if the masses out there want (on their own accord) to bid crazy high and are willing to pay crazy high, then more power to the seller! If the buyer feels he is getting what he wants at the price he is willing to pay for it, then god bless the buyer!... NO ONE is forcing him to pay that much. When multiple people really really really want it and if the timeing of their desires just happen to coincide, then the "bidding war" happens. In the end, which is what really matters at the end of the day, that the buyer is happy and the seller is happy, then the auction was succesful for both.
Seems that those "outside" the auction, just watching it like a drama on the television, can comment all day long... but that doesn't really matter... just pointless gossip.

Yep, my $500 Penton 125 Six-Day started a bidding war between two guys that both HAD to have it; bidding ended at $2,300 in the last few minutes.

I was happy.

Yep, love selling on ebay, except the fees.

I made a $150 purchase, 5 days later re listed it and sold it for $500.

I like life, except for the fees.

I saw that Norman Hyde Fork Brace. Didn't last long. Thought about buying it before you got it. :x When you snooze you lose. Good turnover there.

I laid hands on 5 of them in the last 2 years, I still have 2, sold the other 3, all made money.

It's one way I make money to keep my Norton addiction going. I guess it flames the fire thou...

Actually the reason the United States Post Office is in "trouble" and "losing money", closing branches etc. is because in 2006 the Conservative controlled Congress passed legislation requiring them to fund employee retirement benefits 75 years in advance! FedEx and UPS both spend tens of millions of dollars a year lobbying(buying) the U.S. Congress to get laws like this passed and also to eliminate laws that would otherwise grant their employees better wages and benefits.

So you can blame UPS and FedEx for driving up USPS rates.

If you subtract the billions of dollars that the USPS has had to un-necessarily dump into it's retirement fund since 2006, it would be handily profitable. But being able to show the dumb US public on FOX news that it is losing money every year is a good tool to foster further support against it so conservative lawmakers can continue to destroy it and use it as a showcase for how much better private corporations could serve U.S. citizens.

For this reason, because I am a true patriot and supporter of the middle class and general population, I refuse to use FedEx and UPS just to save myself or anyone else a few dollars, unless they stop the practice of bribery where the U.S. Government is concerned.

I have sold quite a few motorcycle parts through Ebay to overseas customers using the United States Postal Service, including recent sales to Japan, Germany and the U.K.. The shipping of a speedometer, camshaft and springs and a brake pedal respectively to these locations averaged around $50 for shipping, not counting my time and fuel costs to pack it up and drive to the increasingly fewer numbers of Post offices.

Likewise in the recent past I have bought items from the U.K. through the post and have paid dearly, so it is not a one-way street at all, just a fact of life.
