Dynatek dual output mini coils

I'm trying to find the smallest possible coil/s for my T140 project. I'm getting wildly conflicting views from all sorts of sources, so I'm hoping people on this forum might be able to help.

A couple of T140 owners tell me they're using the Dyna DC6-1 coils on their bikes, using points ignition (as I intend to), and they work fine. The DC1-3 is smaller, so I'm hoping that, as this is also 3 Ohm primary resistance, it will be equally useable. But I can't find anyone who is using, or has used one.

The Dynatek tech support isn't much help: they say the DC6-1 wont work and I need to buy two DC10-1s, which are 5 Ohm with single outputs. This would defeat the whole object, which is to save space as much as possible.

If anyone out there knows whether I can use DC1-3s or not, I'd be very glad to hear, thanks.

I bought a dual output 3 ohm dyna mini coil

After I bought it from a dealer I found out from dyna that it is only recommended for ignitions with "Dwell control" . This means I can't use it with my old analogue Boyer ( or with points).

I think the reason is that the compact design does not dissipate heat very efficiently and at low rpm when the points are closed for long periods , the coil could overheat.

If you want to go ahead, I have a brand new one.... cheap.

Thanks to all above, this forum is excellent for concise, relevant and well informed responses.

Pommie John, re. those mini Dyna coils, that's just what the Dyna tech guy told me - though he also said the larger DC6-1 wouldn;t work, and I know it does (from others who use it). But never mind, the KZ550 coil sounds fine - can I just check, is that link to a GPZ1100 coil the same coil (or one that will do the same job)? At £34 new, its a bargain, I just want to check first. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure they are the same.

You might want to check part numbers, but I'm 90% certain they are the same.

You can also get a nice high output coil from trispark. More expensive and it has bonded in HT leads, but a good quality item.

I used the Kawasaki coil on my Norton race bike for years. I only changed it after some dyno testing indicated there was something amiss with the ignition at high RPM

-Hi, I had fitted a Dynatek DC7-1, 5 ohms ........not a mini coil but small enough , with a pazon Altair........

I fitted a DC6-1 to a B44 with twin plugs and Boyer analogue, took 10 to 15 miles depending on temps before it stopped sparking, restarted 10 mins later. Replaced it with a HD twin coil and no further problems, I think 3 ohms is too close to the bottom end of Boyers recommendation, the HD measures as 3.5 ohms and this difference is enough. No idea if points would have the same issues.

I used single output versions of these, with a Trispark, on a big triple motor. They were great, the distance the spark would jump was staggering, could have welded with it!
Highly recommended IMHO.
