Looking for some ideas and help with mounting options here guys. I'm struggling to get the coil anywhere that works and with the need to mount it by the ears to allow for heat dissipation makes it even more challenging.

Any tips and ideas (photos greatly appreciated) ?

I've just put one on last weekend; and have yet to hook it up to the harness, ignition and spark plugs. I took off the old coil bracket, and purchased a heat sink from Pazon (I live in NZ, so that was no big deal; it cost about $20; and was better than anything that I could have made up myself; in fact I could not have bought the raw materials for that price (although would have bought a much larger quantity of aluminium). The Pazon heat sink was a perfect fit for the RGM dual output coil; there are pictures of it on the Pazon website.

I connected the heat sink to the frame under the fuel tank in the same position as the old coil bracket; to do that I had to make a bracket out of a piece of aluminium and bolt the heat sink onto that bracket; the bracket used the same bolt holes as the old coil bracket. It seems a logical place to put it; easy to connect to the pazon ignition box; which is in the triangle section of the frame immediately behind the steering head, and easy to get the leads to the spark plugs.

I'll try to take a picture and post it some time soon.
 
Ahhh yes thanks Chris that's what I'm after..well something like that....I was trying to get the coil as far back as possible to get it away from engine heat.

Are these really that sensitive to heat or is the same coil position as the original fine?
 
My installation was not to a Commando frame, but may work for some.

I have a Rickman which has a short horizontal rail from the headstock back to brace/triangulate everything. This is just forward of and above the cylinder head, so not that unlike a Commando.

I measured the tube OD and got two cheap alloy 'steering damper brackets' off ebay. They clamp around the tube and have athreaded hole for a damper to fit to. I made two small 90 degree brackets, one side having an 8mm hole to bolt to the damper bracket, the other a 6mm bolt to go through the coil. I used button head set screws to keep things compact. The coil is now connected to the frame itself as heatsink via the alloy brackets.

Sounds like a neat set up SteveA. I was initially thinking along these lines but I have a Dave Taylor type head steady which takes up all the useable space on the triangular frame rail. I would think that using the frame is definitely the best heat sink outcome.
 
Hi Fella

I mounted mine slightly forward and centrally in the same area as the original coils after removing the complete bracket they were mounted on. The HT leads point forward from the coil then double back along each side. I had to make some spacers to keep the coil away from the frame and a small bracket to catch the coil rear mount. Sorry I can't post any pictures at the moment as I'm away at work for the next few weeks. I've had it on the bike now for 2000 miles with no problems with heat from the engine.

I don't know what a RGM coil looks like, but here is how I mounted my Excel Harley coil, may be some help:
I used a 3/4" angle, but you could bend a piece of sheet metal the same. Drill it to match the existing holes it bolts right up.

Here are a few pictures of how I mounted my RGM coil last weekend; apologies if they are a bit dark and unclear; I took them last night after dark. As stated in my previous post, I bought a heat sink from Pazon; and I understand that it is necessary to have a heat sink to distribute heat from the coil. To mount the heat sink to the frame I bolted it to a couple of strips of aluminium that I had; and drilled the aluminium to match the bolt holes in the tank support that previously were used to mount the old coil mount (and I suppose you could just use the old coil mount and attach the heat sink direct to that).

I had to choose whether to have the leads to the spark plugs facing forward, so that they were curved back towards the spark plugs, or mount the coil so that the leads were facing backwards. That would have been cleaner, but would have meant that the spade connectors to the ignition and ground were facing forward; with the most exposure to weather when riding. I have elected to mount the ignition so that the connectors are facing backwards, which hopefully will protect them more.

See the difference in road and racer logic.....

I mounted my RGM coil with the HT leads exiting rear to get shortest run to the plug!

Made mental note that if the fairing fails to protect LT connections I may have to spray them regularly with WD! 8)
 
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going with the same solution as ChrisT.....not sure about leads forward or back yet!
