Got a chance to pick up a pair of fairly beaten up Dunstall silencers for pretty cheap. How do these perform/sound on an 850 MKII? Any fitment issues? My welded-mute peashooters are a bit too quite for my taste and I want to open things up with unbalanced header and no mutes.

I've run these on both unbalanced pipes and the 2-1-2 setup. They WILL sound different. They WILL sound just fine. Fitment? You'll need the adapters/shims to fit a stock pipe. Performance? I never cared. Still have my setup.

I like mine... They aren't extremely loud at an idle, but they aren't quiet either. If I crack the throttle open then they are pretty loud. I use my pipes' volume to let drivers around me know I'm right there riding in the lane next to them. Loud pipes save lives... Mine are pretty old and banged up too. I've never had reverse megaphones on my bike.

Just using unbalanced down pipes will make a difference to how your bike sounds, removing your mutes will make it sound better
The dunstall silencers sound good ,they sound a bit deeper than pea shooters
But give them a good shake and make sure the baffle isn't loose before you buy them

The balanced pipes on the Titanic make it sound like a single. Not a fan, but that's the way they came back then.

OK, thx for the quick replies...seems these are worth the shipping from next door province at only $25 cdn pricing....easy enough to swap out if I don't like 'em. Must admit I like the look of the peashooters...but the Dunstalls may grow on me....

You'll like the sound, and if you don't like them you can sell them to me (ha ha) Motorists these days are texting and talking on the phone while they drive even if it's against the law. They don't pay enough attention to the road to see us. Your new dunstalls are just loud enough to make people know you're right there. In the same way people talk about a full coverage helmet being better protection than a half helmet, a louder bike makes you more visible,... or audible which is even better because they hear you even if they are looking at their stupid smart phone!

As long as texters don’t have their ear buds in ..... tech is used to sell cars now and the highlighted features are those that allow driver to pay less attention to what they responsible for .... sure loud helps but beware ....

You may like the sound, but everyone around you won’t! Dunstall’s make a weird chirping sound that will make anyone following you want to pull along side and rip them right off your bike. Not a fan.

When I finally part with my old shorty's I'll be going to Dunstall. Had the peashooters years ago and never really cared for the tone. Looked good, but the only time they sounded right was when I was beating the cat, and couldn't very well do that continuously.
Anyway the Dunstall muffs look real nice I think...never heard any though. Don't live in a Norton rich environment.

i had them on my 850 with the balanced pipes. that is a sound file which i could not shake, and as a result i am back to Norton... we'll talk when i get out your way shortly...

Brief ride yesterday on my 750 Enfield with clone Dunstall silencers on unbalanced pipes. They are loud but I think a bit deeper than my straight through AN peashooters on 850 unbalanced Commando. Honestly both bikes are louder than Id like. However both bikes arent too bad in town if
you go real easy. I live in a quiet part of the country so not really a problem once away from towns.

I always found the tubes welded in the end of dunstalls very handy as a drill guide when you open them up a bit
Cheers

That's strange - I've had both on my combat and my experience is the opposite.
Peashooter's chirp, Dunstall's burble (on deceleration).

Can you describe this noise I've never heard it?
I've had dunstalls on my commando and also on an 860 gt Ducati
And on a BMW r100 and I have never heard it
Is it on deceleration?

I had Dunstalls many years ago when they were the current craze, along with the 2-1-2 pipes. Mounting them was an issue, they didn't mate up with the stock brackets.

It’s a chirping sound, mostly at constant speed, rider probably can’t hear it, really annoying to your buddies if you’re out front. I used to ride with several people with them, I always tried to stay ahead or way back.

That's a new one. I've run these off and on for 40 plus years and have never heard mention of that.

I ran Dunstalls with balanced pipes on my '72 Combat. The exhaust note was deeper than with peashooters but not objectionable--and seemed to be worth an extra bhp or so--just down a notch in perceived output from high-level SS-style unbalanced pipes on both sides with peashooters
