Dunstall silencers

I run a Dunstall setup with a pair of genuine spares on the shelf. I guess copies can be called what they want but in my opinion they're not Pauls/Blairs... I have a pair of Emgo copies from some time ago that look and sound ok. I'm just a sucker for the stamp on the side I guess.

The real deal kind of sucks if retaining the bean can over the straight though tubes path and rather heavy at the end till the clutter removed but then its a blaring Loud exhaust that could get you or me shot by farmers or night shift workers. The long dong mega's do need some tuning fiddling to get more than just extra noise of course.

I don't know what clutter you speak of and I don't find them blaring. In fact they're pretty mellow "at speed" or so say the people I ride with. Yea, they can bark on acceleration but I find peashooters will do the same and are sometimes louder.

The 'clutter' is the cluster of metals tubes and post to mount the steel end can, so with those left intact yes its pretty mellow note with similar mellow powerband to match is all. I love the looks but not the extra mass and muffling if left the way they came for civilization noise rules. A fellow here told me he's got a pair for me to pick up someday as he'd gotten smart enough not to cycle and work on them no more. Do keep spare rubber mounts on hand to stay ahead of the extra mass on end at longer lever advantage point. Also real Dunstall's 'long dongs' tends to accelerate the header fractures at the front bend too.

Ah, I see. I call it a signature look.. I've run these with both the stock pipes and presently 2-1-2 and haven't experienced any fractures nor failure of the rubbers. I've always used the angular mounts which may or may not explain the lack of stress?

Ok the angular mounts rather than full vertical shearing likely saved you the issues I had on very rough surfaces. A photo of your angular mounts would be appreciated as I've yet to construct Peel's Dunstall mounts yet but have 45' in mind with spring support to boot.

Nah, this all original. PM me with yer email address so I can take pics and provide some measurements.

I have the real deal too on my MKIII. They sound great and look good too. I always thought they all had special mounts but may be wrong.

Only thing I don't like about mine is a small visible ding in one of them.

I want to say I've tried to mount them sans the mounts on stock pipes with no luck, but that was many beers ago. Presently with the 2-1-2 you have to use them. You have them mounted without the plates?

Back to the original question
If you think these are dunstall...which dunstall parts? The classic norton long "decible" silencers (of which there are at least 2 internal configurations) still all had the same external appearance. I very highly suspect these RED CAP MEGATRON (what ever that is) may be at best some of the Japanese bike dunstalls, but IMO they absolutely NOT of the style that were on nortons of the day.
The 1-5/8" 1-3/4" hook ups are to big for commando pipes. Real dunstalls came with the pipe reducers so they would go on a 1-3/8" commando pipe. I have several sets for reference.

I've had these on since almost new, no rust or cracking. I love the look and the tone. I don't know if you'd call these "original" or not.

I found they were hard on the rear rubber mounts too so ran a rod from my homemade seat pan near the base of the rear loop shock mount area down to the plate that bolts to the muffler.

I posted my setup for someone here a while back and couldn't find the post so here goes again in case it helps:

You have exactically what I have with only one difference.
I have the 3-3/4" with center nut....however it came early with my 1968 dunstall atlas (one of the 68 homologated atlas')
see pix here:
http://atlanticgreen.com/dunstall.htm

The 3-1/4" are on my 75 commando that I first rode at the 1995 Hiawassi ?sp Georgia rally.

both sets have the dunstall decible imprint.

jaydee75 if that photograph of a Dunstall Decibel is a fairly recent one, I would get the muffler stuffed and put it in a glass case. It must be the only surviving piece of original Dunstall chrome that still exists.

Way back in the late 60s and 70s we used to visit shops with displays of go faster stuff, and peel off chrome from displayed mufflers. Dunstalls were not the worst, but they were not much good.

I had a new pair of Dunstall Decibels in the early 70s, they went rusty within one month, after being stowed indoors. I had a Dunstall racing cam that wore its lobes off, inside of 4,500 miles as well.

In my book Dunstall stuff = rubbish.
But then I'm biased

Well I am glad that got cleared up!
I forget - what was the question?

I tried to answer in the second post...not sure what to think. They say they are made in England. You never commented on this.

DennisGB - It's still a mystery to me too - but maybe my short history with Dunstall silencers was tainted with emotion rather than quality memories anyway?

Not sure but if you go to dunstallmotorcycles.com they show the same ones and say they are made in England...but is this really Dunstall? Not sure maybe someone else knows. I thought the originals were not made anymore.

Not sure what these are.
