DT head steady slop

I'm not sure what size ludwig's central bolt (stud?) was. I never went anywhere with it, it was easier for me to make the Mike Taglieri HS from aluminum and heim/rose/joint end joints. But ludwig's sure looks simple if you can fabricate metal. If I had unlimited money, I'd get the CNW one.

I just Googled "Ludwig head steady" and found these though strangely if you select "go to page" to see a larger image they are the usual dead Photobucket links. Anyway they will help visualize Ludwig's very simple creation.

That looks like a different version of the PR HS than the one ludwig sent me. Wonder where that one came from, looks like it doesn't go through the frame, not that it needs to?

Actually DogT you are right. Looking more closely at the original drawings you have and the text from Ludwig where the components are mostly always in the singular it looks like his was a "single sided" head steady, and actually pretty (very) simple to make. He used only two bolts into the head and the third was used for a spring a-la Mk3 to lift weight off the front ISO. I might try and make a mock up if I get time, unless you have some more pics?

Ludwig is a very Clever guy !! why doesn't he post on here any more?

I've already done his caliper piston mod, (well worth doing) and would love to see some more of his pics back on here if anybody has some, but err - ideally not hosted on photo*uckit though !!!

cliffa.

Actually I think this was made by jaydee75.

Clever too !!

Yeah, that was my take, that ludwig's HS was one sided. That's all I've got of the HS, I may have some more if his stuff, but not much, it's all disappeared now. I think he got fed up with the forum, he was way ahead of most of us and could get pretty rude about it. I'm surprised he sent me what he did. He told me once 'if you don't have a full machine shop you have no business owning a Norton'. I think he's gone from the Britbike forum too, I haven't been there in a long time.

Actually, looking at your earlier post this photo makes it pretty clear...

But i wonder what the steel rod clamped to it is doing?

Ground bar? He wouldn't have used it if it didn't have a use. I think he had his bike under 400 lb. I liked his chain adjuster setup, but it requires a lot of tool making.

Well I'm not sure what RGM are using but the original rose joints fitted in 2001/2 are still doing fine on my Mk3 850. They've covered at the very least 25000 miles. Dave

It took me a couple of days wondering how on earth you could possibly cover at the very least 25000 miles with these small open ball joints :?
............ until I finally understood "cash" = Dave Taylor

Well hello Ludwig !! Thank you for responding.

As soon as I saw some of the pics of your headsteady ( which I have to say is great) that DogT posted I could see the the ones Google found weren't yours, but are in fact jaydee75's version.

I've been a big fan of your work since joining Access Norton, but unfortunately many of your pictures on Photobucket no longer existed. Keith1069 kindly sent me some pics of the caliper piston mod which I have done and have recommended to other folks as well.

That's a great idea to support the carbs - it did have me baffled I have to admit. Can I ask what poundage rating that spring is?

I''d love to see some pics of your bike if you have some ?

As you say a lots of topics get repeated on this and all other forums that I frequent, it's inevitable unfortunately.

Cheers,

cliffa

Thanks for clearing that up ludwig. Nice to see you post.

Norton should have put that in their marketing materials

acadian,
I am running my Interstate 850 with a DT. Installed it at 24k miles and I still have it at 63K miles. The only issue that I had was one of the legs of the MK3 spring which broke, and I had to replace it last year. Its fine with no slop. Keep it oiled when you poke about the head area and before you go on long trips.

Herb Becker came up with a design using Teflon pads and I think Doug MacRae has this on his race bike.
May be he could enlighten us or check older posts...that is if he did not use PB

CNN, I saw this setup on Herb's drag bike at the Intl Show, only thing I couldn't figure out was where the perpendicular support came from?
