One of the ball joints on my CNW (Jim Comstock) head steady is showing some signs of wear.

Has anybody found a source of replacements for these in the UK? If so, could you pass on the details please.

I doubt many people have managed to get one to wear and you might spend a lifetime (or longer) looking for the actual ball joint used. (Without simply asking Jim Comstock or CNW < (out of unit stock) about a replacement)

I would think it is sourced from a automotive gear shift linkage though.

Do you have the equivalent of McMaster-Carr in the UK?
I'm sure Matt could give you the specs on them.

Reggie,

Get a hold of me at my shop, nortonworks@fone.net, and I will send you a replacement. No charge

I am away for a few more days but will be back before New Years

Matt

OK, thank you very much for that. It's very generous and much appreciated Matt. I'd be more than happy to cover your costs. I will be in contact.
Reggie.

I’m surprised there’s wear. Where are you seeing the play at?

The wear is on the ball joint that connects to the cylinder head mounting, as opposed to the ball joint that connects to the bracket that connects to the frame.

The joint isn't tight and I can hear a (quiet) click and feel a small amount of play in the ball housing when I push and pull it. Also when holding the mounting bracket upside down and horizontal, when I release it it drops down to approx a 6 o'clock positon of its own volition. The joint is slack and has a small amount of wear.

I noticed some slackness earlier this year, about 3500 miles ago and although I'm sure it's not causing a problem or likeley to for some time, it's not going to get any better so thought that I'd replace it.

Reggie,

Really, no cost to you. Parts or shipping. I consider these lifetime parts and if it for whatever reason doesnt perform, you are covered.

There will always be circumstances where we see unusual wear and even failures. It would be naive to look at it as nothing ever goes bad. That said, when you buy it from me, I want to make sure you know that I will take care of it, regardless of why or how long ago you got the parts.

Matt

Thank you Matt.

Matt,
I have found that the electric starter kit I got from you starts instantly every time for 3 years, I expect it will wear out sometime
and being proactive wondered if you will ship me a new one in anticipation of future failure?
Norm;)

I suspect most owners of CNW e-starts will expire before the starter does.

Maybe I should just send you a couple of them to be on the safe side.......

My engine is out of the frame right now and I have t say I did notice that there was a tiny amount of play in one of the ball joints.
Only has 10k on it and it is just barely detectable. I mention it only to add to the data pile.
