Does anyone know of a vendor that makes these type of pinstripe decals for Dominator tanks? I'm looking for a style similar to what is sold for Manx or other types of alloy tanks. I've reached out to a couple of companies but got no response.

These would have been originally painted on.

It doesn't take that much to mask them up and achieve that.
Although getting nice clean edges - and that fine red pinstripe - may take some practice.
Ask me again in a few weeks, when i get brave and try it on a tank I've been saving up for something similar....

Any idea about the specs on the "Norton" script as in this pic? Length or models of bike that used this particular decal?

Pin-striping with paint was an art widely practiced back in the 60's. It gave way to cheap tape stripes.

You need to find an old craftsman .... but OTOH, these days his hands may be too shakey.

I wonder if there are any shops with paint jet technology to do striping? Following the contours of the tank may be a bit of a challenge.

Good luck with it. It will be pretty if you can get it done.

That Norton decal with Regd Trade Mark underneath was widely used, and was about the only thing available for Nortons from about the 1930s
right up until the slimline era (1960) when tank badges appeared. (Although some round badges had also appeared mid 1950s).

The ones I have are 4 1/2 " long, and about 1 1/2" high.
Any numbers of suppliers have had them, and they vary a bit.

I 'm thinking the factory must have used a silk screen technique to apply both the stripe and the Norton script. If so, the screen mask would have been made on a tank shaped form, otherwise the stripes would be deformed when the screen was stretched over the contour of the tank. It would be expensive to make a one off screen mask. With enough kilo-bucks, anything can be done!

The factory used decals for the Norton logos.
There are still tanks around with them surviving.
The decals were listed in the parts books.

Dunno about the stripes, thought they were hand painted on ?
There is footage somewhere of both present day Royal Enfield and Triumph employees doing this freehand.
The speed and accuracy is just breathtaking.

They must have used some sort of tape to define the area(s) to be painted though, on older type chromed/painted/panelled tanks.
??

Thanks for the replies. I had a fella in Australia contact me back and is interested in trying to make decal striping for this type of Dominator tank.

Are there any references to the actual stripe dimensions? I'm guessing not especially if done by hand. Any input for the appropriate landmarks to begin the stripe in the front or end it near the rear is appreciated. The contour of the tank along the upper portions can help guide that portion.

I think you will find that this is not actually a factory scheme, but some owners version of something along his own lines.
Just copy what he did, more or less...

Its not that difficult to buy a roll of vinyl and cut your own scheme/stripes.
Although scissors alone may not produce an entirely smooth look !

I'd lift that lower blackstripe a bit higher above the base.

Apparently this is a popular tank motif. Below is the cover of NOC Sept Roadholder magazine.

Well yes, a lot of Nortons over many decades had a factory paintjob of silver with the black and the fine red pinstripe.

But the featherbed tank example shown here is not a factory job.
Its an owners version of it.

This is the tank for my cafe wideline.
Its fibreglass though, so probably destined to sit on the shelf forever (?).

I bought it like that, its a copy of the popular manx shape tank paint scheme.
The black is about 7/8" and the red pinstripe is thicker than it should be..

Rohan,

Is the pinstripe on your manx style tank a decal or hand painted? Approximately how wide is proper for the red stripe?

I don't actually know.
Its very heavily clear coated over, but its quite a bump to run your hand over.
I'd have said its painted, but without scratching it to find out....

The red pin stripe was very fine.
One sixteenth of an inch maybe ?

You can buy 1mm pinstriping tape - which is still pretty fine.

Is it only me that cant see this image? This happens quite a bit on this form for me, getting only a generic image icon.

visible ?

Same site I've used for most pics.
Quick and easy, and seemed good...

I think I am a special case.

Jerry blocked Romania after he got scammed. So I can only see the forum at work. And the work firewall decides your link may be adult content - and blocks it.

Never mind. Worse things happen at sea :D

You can get decals of the tank stripes from here: They are about one third of the way down a very loooong page.
