I inherited this wheel today. The man I received it from thought it was from a old Norton.Any thoughts??

Does anyone know what this is from?

Not Norton.
Nortons have the brake shoes pivot off 2 different pivot points, and a steel brake drum, not the pressed tin type like you look to have there.

Thats one marque down, about 10,000 more to go.... !

P.S. That is a VERY small flange on the non-brake side. Size. ?
And what diam is the brake drum ?

This would have been better in the non-Commando section as it certainly isn't Commando. The brake plate doesn't look like a Norton design at all.

It looks like the hideous BSA 7 in TLS brake . Had a winker telling me his A65 had one last night . Could see it was a 8 in SLS . 8) then theres the two grades HOTTER plugs . and other technical intricacies .

ANYWAY , these were so your wheel wouldnt lock on the dirt / scrambles . Not entirely the worlds best brake . Do you have a brick & a piece of rope . :)

You can see the Air Scoop here .

you should be carefull on wet clay if you use your full strength , you MAY lock the wheel , downhill , if its raining .

( set up right it mightnt be to bad for a light bike , problem was the 7in was pressed , the 8 in is cast . therefore it works . )

My guess would be BSA, but there are a lot of years, and a lot of models with that narrow hub with no scoop.

One give-away is the depression in the outer cover plate from the axle area outward to the torque fixing; that might narrow it down...

BSA-A7-A10-B34-7-INCH-FRONT-WHEEL  MAYBE it WAS standard . The airscoop was a previous bodge , understandable nevertheless .
The rear however , if you didnt take up the slack very gently , or just pushed the lever down .Would lock the rear whell untill at leat 60 mph .
Above that I kept the foot well clear of it , maybe I had tryed it once . Along with the bent forks , at least it wouldnt throw you over the bars .

Criminal neglegance . shouldve sorted the old girl out .Blame the domestic situation . . Nice comfortable old cow to ride . 16.9 @ 81 felt like
a ( slow ) tractor , after the Bonneville . The plungers / sliders wernt worn , however the tailbone over the seat frame on bottoming was excruciateing .

Picture theres from a Ebay thing .

Someone elsewhere has called it Harley.
Sportsters do have a brake like that...

A look at the brake shoes can often tell a lot.

With the exact size of the brake drum, diameter X with and maybe the stamped writing on the chrome rim, maybe the BSA or Triumph website could find the model :?:
