Several fixes attempted by Norton over the production runs .
Yes , try to restake the loose paddle . I would also put a bit of welding to seal the deal up , to all 3 . You may have to grind away any protruding weld and of course check all 3 for solidity and clearance before/on the install .
 
Andy, i turned mine down on a lathe. Teeth are pretty hard, but slow with a carbide tool was ok. Graham
 
Rob, pretty sure i removed it from the outside, LH side, because it was easier to mount in the chuck. Thought about removing metal from both sides but came to the conclusion it would not matter. Sprockets are far enough apart not to worry about it. Done about 4000 miles with the new hub and brake. No more problems. Graham

You weren't worried about going through the case hardening by taking it all from one side?
 
Rob, the teeth are quite hard. I don't know how it is heat treated. Maybe induction hardened or flame hardened. Probably not case hardened. Regardless, the chain should not cause any wear on the side of the sprocket. Graham
 
I would suggest equal amounts 1/16" off either side but comparing gearbox sprockets may reveal that the difference isn't equal from the sprocket seat
 
When I converted to 520 chain I mounted the mainshaft sproket and put a straightedge on it to a new AN drum/sprocket. All the material needed to come off the left or outside of the teeth. Mounted it on a rotary table on the Bridgeport and milled it with a standard HS steel end mill. Did not appear to be hardened at all. 6 ot 7 thousand miles so far and no apparent signs of wear.
 
I got over 35 years out of the original rubbers on my 74 Commando hub before they started to get a little bit of end play so I brought a new set of cush rubbers from my local British bike shop, they lasted a whole 6 months before they were fully flogged out completely, so I ordered a set from RGM but I ordered 3 sets, so far after 15+ years they are still doing their job as they should and I have 2 spare sets in my parts cabinet.
The cush rubbers today aren't the same as the original rubbers of yester years, but so far am very happy with the ones I got from RGM, depends where the cush rubbers are made, so much junk being sold these days, glad my old Norton is very reliable as I hardly replace anything on it in the 50 years of owning it.
