Managed to strip the threads where it protrudes out the drive side crankcase on Crazy Combat. :x Could just leave it as this long delicate stud is not leaking oil but it doesn't look right without the little washer and nut there. So HOW to remove it and put in a new replacement ? Anyone know the thread sizes for each end of it ? Thanks.

Could we get a pic of your handy work?

The book says 1/4" stud with 20tpi thread on one end and 28tpi on the exposed end.

I'll bet the end threaded into the timing side is loc-tited in so would be difficult to remove without splitting the cases.

Good luck. Should not be critical for case oil tightness.

i'd call a vendor with bone yard used one or buy new one but likely will run fine as ever maybe with a bit of oil weeps other wise. I may even have one left over from my crazy making Combat engine events. Sometimes only the nut screws off, other times the whole stud comes out. Which is normal?

Front ISO mounting should hold it all together. If no significant leaking around stud then I would risk living with it till other reason comes along that needs cases splitting. Epoxy based glue should be able to hold domed nut on for purely cosmetic reason but be removable when time comes without any problems. If you managed to strip thread without pulling stud out of the softer alloy case chances are it will not come out without a fight and so best to split cases for best access to it.

Gosh if epoxied a nut on the end and heat cases some, likely the stud will screw right out and be re-usable maybe with a washer to make sure clamp force can be attained. I sure like dome nuts looks better than raw nuts in most places. Best Harley shops especially vintage ones often have a selection of chrome dome and pike nuts.

I have a 72 motor that came to me with that stud stripped. Couldn't remove it so I ran it for several years without issue. I used some JB Weld to glue a dome nut on, purely for cosmetic reasons. Eventually I split the cases to do some other work and replaced the stud. The dome nut came off easily. All back together now, no issues. :D
