Hi there, I am fighting right now with the crank end play, I had something around 25 thou at the start so I slip a ten thou on one side then a five thou the other side and now when the cases are fully bolted , I can't feel neither measure any play , thougfh the crank was free spinning, it's after several trials (with only two bolts for the case but not cement, so I had assumed I had a safety margin, but no way ...........) should I dismantle it again or sit and pray after my lucky star the cases will expand with heat ..........Pierre ( totaly lazy on this Sunday)...........

There is a guy that sells isolastic setups and head steadys on ebay. I bought his stuff for a little savings. He races Nortons and builds them fairly regularly. Don't remember his name. Anyway I asked him about crank end play since I got my superblends from him. He told me He liked to get 3 thousandth's inch. I mentioned that on this forum to someone that asked the same question and I was eaten alive by the "expurts"

Could it be a case of 'bearing fit' increasing the interference in the cases and reducing the internal clearance in the bearings ? Was the end float discernable whilst the cases were still hot ?

Give it a crack with a block of wood and a mallet in both direction a few times to see it things seat up. Recheck for end play. As 79x100 says, heat up the end mildly to see if they loosen up.

I take it you are using the large shims that go under the bearing next to the crank case? Sounds like something is not seated correctly, try heating the cases and knocking the bearings in a bit tighter, I had to do that with mine. Personally I wouldn't put it together finally until I had some play.

Hi , tried to hit several times with hammer and lug of hard wood.........no more play.
yes Lab, the cases were still a bit hot from fitting the bearing in, could be the way to follow? and I know that when I feel lazy to do it one more time , after I felt really bad , so tomorrow I will dismantle the cases (Yamabonded!!) reheat cases, take the bearings out , play with shims and heading for 5thou........i hate those Sunday.
