My '70 Commando wears the teeth on the SurfleX clutch plates down to nubs in about 5000 miles. Changing to a belt drive primary and a cush drive rear hub makes the wear more uniform ( the inner plates used to wear out first), but the mileage is not significantly better.

Any ideas what's going on ?

Thanks

Greg

Just a thought, but how's your clutch center look? If it's "notched up," perhaps that's what's grinding away at the plate teeth?

Yeah, if the inner or outer splines are worn sharp, the plates don't have a prayer.

Had a similar issue last season, replaced the center with a hardened version and that seems to have cleared it up. When I dug in there last month to install a 5 plate Barnett stack, the splines showed no wear at all.
