Clutch spring compressor tool

I feel the caution note in the factory manual from memory is a little over the top in regaurds to the amount of spring pressure danger and the over engineerined equipment to put the diaphragm spring in a neutral position.
I made mine out of heavy wall plastic drainage pipe counter sunk plywood cap with a small steel centre (a flat plate with a hole in it would suffice)...no nut required ...tighten bolt while holding the compressor tool...job done
Agree, made mine from an ABS pipe cap and it worked fine with a drilled steel plate across the top for reinforcement...FWIW the same deal on my Harley Sportster which uses a similar diaphragm spring.

Thanks for all the replies , & thanks to gortnipper for the pic , made things a lot easier to understand .

I have two clutch tools. Neither have that internal thread. And I have never needed it in 40 plus years of removing Norton diaphragm clutches.

So it's a bit of a mystery to me why it's there.
Weren't those tools also used on the AJS Stormers too?

At a pinch i have used on the side of the road down country for a mates bike ...2 small ring spanners under the adjuster and some wedge shaped flat river stones jammed under the outer ends of the spanners to remove the diaphragm spring to re tighten loose mainsharft nut ...even collected the atf with a plastic bag and poured it back in.....Kiwi ingenuity 101 :)
