Checking float levels

Has anyone checked float levels using amal's suggested method of drilling a spare drain plug and fitting a clear tube. I'm trying this and was wondering where to reference the measurement from the top of the float bowl due to the tilt of the carb. Center of carb, front, back? Amal suggests fuel level .210 below float bowl rim +/- .05.

With the bike running well, the fuel level was within the specified limits toward the front of the bowl. I know that's not a particularly scientific answer.

It also checks the needle valves for leakage. Don't need any stinkin' fires. It also might be a good idea to check the petcocks while you're about it for leakage. This stuff does wear out.
