Has anybody had any experience with the cheap and cheerful speedos and tachos that are widely available for about $100 a pair? I am thinking of trying them for a non-standard project that I will be working on soon and wonder whether they work and last longer than 5 minutes.

yes- they are OK - i've used them on norton and triump based bikes
they maybe better than a original smiths for the money though they of course do not really look like the originals -just make sure you get the right ratio for your application

Out of curiosity, is there a reference source/page for original "stock" Commando speedometer drive ratios, (and do those ratios vary in the 70-75 model year time frame?

There's only one drive box ratio 1.25:1 (or 15/12) although the MkIII drive box is a different unit, the ratio is the same.

Speedos were either 1000 turns per mile, or 600 turns per kilometre.

Revcounters were all 4:1 ratio.
