hi Guys,
Can anyone advise how much "stretch" is too much?

I have a chain on my Mk.III that seems to be OK it stretches 1/2". That's from compression at 60.875" to stretch at 61.375" for a .5" difference.

i read somewhere that 2 1/2 percent is max. My difference is .8 percent. Seems OK but I would appreciate your expertise.
Cheers!
Stephen

The old standard is 1/4" per foot. If you push the links links together, measure 12", then pull them apart...anything more than 12 1/4 inch means new chain (and sprockets).

On 5 feet therefore, it would be 1 1/4" max.

At 1/2", i am a long way from that, so should I shall guess my drive chain is OK.
Thanks!

.8 percent, Rightee-O. Math is clearly not my strong point.............

The ancient and accepted way to know the state of your
chain wear on bike is to try to lift the links out of the valleys
at the very back of the wheel sprocket. There should be none.
The among the links lift out the valley that's where they are
baring on the teeth to apply torque. Other methods
can objectify the wear but not decide the risk as well.

A worn chain no matter how tight tensioned will still lift
links easy out of valleys while a new chain about no matter
how loose tensioned will stay tight into valleys.

At some point of chain wear it accelerated teeth wear especially
at main shaft sprocket, till they bend over and start shedding off.
Rear drum just sorta turns to useless nubbins, or so i'm told : )
