Is there a table somewhere noting the number of final drive chain links needed for the various number of gearbox sprocket teeth?

It usually depends on how far the gearbox and rear wheel can be moved. I usually start with a chain which is too long , and join the ends on the larger sprocket.

Thanks @L.A.B. !! So by marking the chain you can also use this table to work out which front sprocket is fitted to your bike without stripping the primary.

I'd prefer to count the teeth on the front sprocket by lifting the chain guard or looking underneath the swinging arm, mark one tooth with paint or similar then rotate remembering not to count the painted tooth twice..
