Hi- I just recently went through this entire research process. Here is what I have learned from some of the Wizards of Norton on this site. I have the early Commando also, with the frame-mounted stand as you have. If you want to use the later-model centrestand (which is much stronger, more stable, and stresses the frame less), you can do it. All of this is much easier if the bike is disassembled as in your pictures. You just buy the late-model stand, preferably the one that has the extra bracing. Then, you find a late-model engine cradle and either measure or take a paper tracing of the location for the centrestand holes. Next, drill the holes carefully, then mount the stand. The later stand has different bushings than the early one, too. So you need the proper bushings, bolts, and stand, and drill the holes in the proper location, and it should work fine. Again, easier with the cradle off the frame; if it's together, you may need to unbolt a few things and jack the cradle up to be able to drill holes, and they tend to be offcenter and out of round when you do drill them.
Hope this helps- good luck! eric
