Centre stand compatibility.

Hi All,

Looking at a centrestand for my bike (I really hate sidestands), stumbled on to APC's offering at $250, which isn't too bad really. Thing is, it's for 1971 onwards, mine is a '70. What's the difference and can it be easily modified or does it not make sense to do this?

This stand your link goes to is for Commandos with the centre stand that mounts on the engine plates.

Early Commandos had their centre stand that mounted on the frame.

Thet aren't interchangeable. So it depends where the mountings are for yours?

It seems to me that I have read that some have drilled the cradle and installed the newer centre stand on the early frame. Search around you may find it.

Hi- I just recently went through this entire research process. Here is what I have learned from some of the Wizards of Norton on this site. I have the early Commando also, with the frame-mounted stand as you have. If you want to use the later-model centrestand (which is much stronger, more stable, and stresses the frame less), you can do it. All of this is much easier if the bike is disassembled as in your pictures. You just buy the late-model stand, preferably the one that has the extra bracing. Then, you find a late-model engine cradle and either measure or take a paper tracing of the location for the centrestand holes. Next, drill the holes carefully, then mount the stand. The later stand has different bushings than the early one, too. So you need the proper bushings, bolts, and stand, and drill the holes in the proper location, and it should work fine. Again, easier with the cradle off the frame; if it's together, you may need to unbolt a few things and jack the cradle up to be able to drill holes, and they tend to be offcenter and out of round when you do drill them.

Hope this helps- good luck! eric

I had to expand the holes on my cradle to fit the later bushings. I would not recommend it. I had to undo the front motor mounts and jack the engine up and even then I didn't have a great angle on the holes.

Thanks for the information guys,
had a look this arvo and as expected - frame mounts for the center stand. I'll think about getting the cradle drilled, but it sure looks like a dismantle job to get this done. S'pose it would be a good opportunity to get the frame painted. (Does it ever end???) The old-style center stand - is it really not a going proposition, assuming I could locate one?

RGM carries the early ones. I don't have any issues with mine, I really don't understand what the big issue is other than the latest ones seem to be built heavier. Maybe after many miles the early ones wear, but I'm old and decrepit so I use the side stand mostly when I'm out and about. I usually only use the centre stand when it's parked for a while.

Yeah, it's kind of 6 of one/half dozen of the other. The old stand works fine; mine was kind of bent with age (like Dave and me are) and so my bike was a little "tippy" and not stable. The newer stand is sturdier and has a wider stance. If you are of the school that says "Don't start the bike while on the side stand, use the center stand", then the old stand can bend the frame if you ever end up having to kick for an hour as some of us have. But really it's not a huge deal, either stand does what it's supposed to do. Stands.

If you are having problems locatng a early centre stand a freind had some reproduced and i beleive ha has some left i am in the "shakey" part of NewZealand
[Christchurch].

Hi Possm,

Would you mind asking your friend if he still has one available - and what sort of money he wants?

I hope things are on the up after the shakes and that you and your family are all ok.
Some of the OS emergency workers leaving for Japan now I guess.
