Center stand questions (2012)

Probably that powder coating is making the center stand hole a little small - clean it out. I have installed that kit on a 72 and a 74 and there no other issues. The AN parts diagrams/lists show the parts for the original stand and the newer improved stand. You have the newer improved stand. Assuming you have a 750, you need the non-stepped spacer in the center stand, the bolts installed from the inside out, washer outside the center stand, and nut outside that. The bolt/washer/nut lock the spacer to the cradle and the center stand pivots on that spacer.
Okay, i think I understand now. What contributed to my confusion was that on the AN diagram for 73 where they show the configuration for both 750 and 850, the drawing shows different looking center stands but they both are labeled 48 which refers below to the improved part 06-4031. And they show the 750 spacer as 06-1999. I realize now that they are showing how the 750 would go together with the original center stand, but probably don't sell that one anymore.
One last stupid question: The 71 & 72 drawings show the bolt going thru from the center stand side and the 73 drawing shows the bolt coming from the cradle side, as recommended by Greg. Does it make a difference? Is one way better than the other?

Yes, the bolt heads should be on the inside of the cradle as shown on the drawing of the Edit: '73 assembly especially on the left-hand side. If the LH bolt is on the outside and nut inside then the stand spring can foul the bolt thread when the stand is raised or lowered.

IMO the mounting spacers should always be up graded to the late style. Drill the cradle (better support was the reason/71-72 style was inferior design IMO)
The thinned head bolt goes on the LH side for better spring swing clearance. Therefore bolt points out and nuts to the outside

It all makes sense to me now. Thank you all for your help in straightening me out. I 'stand' corrected.

Just to close things out, I did find two 06-4873 spacers in my stash. They had come with the AN center stand kit but I had put them aside. Center stand now installed with proper spacers and bolts oriented correctly. Once again, thank you all for the excellent guidance.

I concur, my centre stand kit had both parallel & top hat spacers
I also found a fair amount of side float on mine so i turned up some thin high density plastic washers to take this out... also stops the met5al to metal contact of stand against cradle
