Yes I know I am opening a very big can of worms again and if the answer to this is somewhere else i apologise i haven't seen it.

Given that it has a higher rating (10/60 as apposed to 20/50) and it is fully synthetic with new fancy titanium additive plus quoted for use it high power an high stress (modern car admittedly) engines would it work in a Commando motor??

It is not that much more expensive than quality 20/50 and easily obtainable here in Britain unlike some other oils which are more easily obtained in America.

I am of course looking for the mythical product that will stop all traces the particles on the magnetic sump plugs and protect the over worked cam and followers. I wish to just change the oil type though not go down the road of which cam or follower to have or why cam oil bath should be there.

Never heard of using a 10W automotive oil in an air-cooled motorcycle. Might be ok for cold-weather riding.

Been using 10/60w fully synthetic for 5 or 6 years, showed a couple of extra leaks which are now fixed, on oil changes the sump magnet is clean instead of being furred up, oil viscosity is the same cold as hot.

Check its zinc content.

If it's designed for modern engines it has to be cat friendly, so zinc is removed / reduced. This is no issue for modern engines, but your flat tappets n cams might suffer.

There are plenty of high quality / high zinc alternatives. I use Redline which has a very high zinc content. Most use their 20/50. I use their 20/60 in the (false?) belief that it's helpful in these (relatively) sloppy old motors!

Note: with redline you MUST buy their motorcycle specific old. Their car oil has very own zinc content.

A 10W60 rating means that at 0C the oil has similar viscosity to 10W oil at 0C and at 100C it would have similar viscosity to 60W oil at 100C.

In other words 10W60 is still much higher viscosity at 0c than it is at 100C -but there is not as much change as there would be if it were a straight weight. Jim

Has anyone ever had the situation where the oil has caused the conical seal in the motor to fail. I currently use a fat neoprene O-ring in there and I often wonder if it is OK. If it fails, how would you know before you got a blow-up ?

Watch the oil pressure gauge. Hopefully you have one because neoprene is not very good with hot oil... Jim
