Carbed 961

FE told me last weekend that the carbed Triumph Scrambler ECU has been used as part of a carb. conversion by Ollie Thiel, as it doesn’t have too many sensor inputs. I will contact Ollie very soon.

Almost…

My understanding is that the Scrambler ign unit is a good choice for this purpose. And I know Ollie has fitted FCRs successfully to these bikes (FCR 39s IIRC) which is actually what they were originally designed for by Dreer.

But I don’t know which donor ign Ollie uses.

Personally, I think a Joe Hunt Mag would be the coolest option !!

Correct.
The Triumph igniter box from the 2004-2009 carbed Scrambler is designed for a 270 degree crank. The box has inputs for crank position sensor, TPS, clutch lever sensor, sidestand sensor, etc, and outputs to coils, tach signal, and starter relay. I don't know the voltages used, so some experimentation/research will be required. I you want to spend some extra $$$ you can still get the PROCOMM version of this box which allows the setting of 6 different ignition curves.

the reply from Ollie said just that I would need an ignition system, but that whatever he used isn’t that good. He can also reprogram the standard ECU to cope with alternative ignition.

Fitted an Ignitech ignition module onto my zxr400 and it's a well sorted and easy to use unit with excellent support and not too expensive.

If carbs / gravity fuel supply, and an extra ignition system were added to a 961, all wired separately from the standard wiring, would it run, leaving all else alone? Seems to me that the ecu might just sit there, sending out signals to wherever ( now redundant) and not cause a problem??

Possibly, but how are intending to add "an extra ignition" system?
What are you diving it off of?

One method: The electrex standard crankshaft- mounted set up has only one trigger, so it would need a second added, for the 270 other cylinder. There is a Stealth Black Box (which is sold by a company 2 miles from here !!) , and with one run from each trigger to it’s appropriate coil, has programmable advance curves which are set up by buttons on the box , so no computer involved.
It also has a vacuum pipe input.
Others have adapted Triumph igniter boxes, but I am not sure any of those have been properly sorted yet.
