Carb tickler leak

1974 Amal carb leaking from tickler after priming. A small tap on carb stops it. Poping on the exhaust that side. Float needle has no adjustment, float not leaking, tickler seating back into card. Is it float needle value? Tip seems ok

You can adjust the float height/fuel level by raising or lowering the needle seating if it has the old type white or brown all-plastic float or by adjusting the tang on the StayUp (black) float although I suggest you check the fuel level (see Amal link, below) before making any adjustments.

I tickle until I get a leak as the best way to start my 850 so just keeping it pressed longer and it will leak, are you saying after you press the tickler it continues to leak.
 
Yes, after release it continues to leak until you tap carb. It starts and has piping out of muffler. That means too rick? Above response seems above my skill level
 
If it's one of the white/brown floats, check there's no fuel actually inside the float (hold the float up to a strong light or shake it) as they can crack along the joint and fuel then gets inside which reduces the buoyancy.
 
As well as the above, the float can be mis-shapen so its edge catches on the side of the float bowl farthest from the pivot. Areas of the gasket can also foul the float.

Dirt can make the needle sticky in the upper part of the brass seat.

Dirt can get between the point of the needle and the seat, but that's not usually a repetitive fault.
 
Has the float needle got a rubber tip? Maybe some sticky stuff coming through the fuel supply and sticking the needle open. Easy option, treat yourself to some stay up floats and new float needles.

That's for two '4 Stroke Major Repair Kits' (inc.VAT)

Two (RKC/551) StayUp float and needle kits (inc.gaskets) are £13.52 each (no VAT to pay as Jtombone is apparently outside the UK/EU).

It happens to me from time to time. Left for work the dark the other morning, and ran kind of rough. 1/2 mile down the road I pulled over and saw gas dripping out of right side carb. Just a couple of taps on the primer (tickler?) and everything was good.
 
Yes to new stay ups and aluminum bodied float needle valves. New gaskets, not overtightened too. :shock:
