Glenn's 850 project came to me with two new Premiers. Alot to like about the new Premiers.
They came already installed with no chokes, with the cable hole properly plugged off.
No worries because that's how I've run Amals here in SoCal for years.
1. I never could get a good tickle.
2. Very hard to start cold.
Confirm float heights..Check
Upsize pilots to 19........Check
Verify Timing...................Check
Changeout Trispark to Boyer....Check
Change plugs, coils, wires...........Check
Install Chokes...................Bingo!!!!!! One or two kick wonder.
I've commented before how this is the only Amal carbed bike I've needed choke.
Bike sat for a little and was running like spit, probably clogged pilots.
Broke out the #78 bit, yup one pilot clogged, the other partially.
Looked over the floats and could see where the tickler was pushing and deforming into the float.
The tickler was bottoming out on top of the float while the float would not go any further. And, it doesn't appear the needle is raising much.
I've read of others switching to the old floats, let's see what happens. Clearly the old float drops further into the bowl and lifts the needle more.
Made a mark on the old float at approx the same spot as the mark on the new float and took a unprecise measurement. Approx. 1mm + deeper in the bowl.
Notice the position of the float at the needle, the old float is raising the needle more.
Notice the tangs at the pivots of both floats, it's a matter of geometry the old float has more leverage.
Took another unprecise measurement of the needle seat on the new vs the old bowls, approx, a fingernail proud on each.
Without any adjustments, installed the old floats in the new bowls and let er rip.
Problem solved. I now get full tickle with easy starts, with or with out the choke.
