OK - showing my newbie colors here... Trying to remove old Amals to install new carbs from JSE.
The space between the front and back intake manifold flanges is VERY tight, and I cannot get any of my allen wrenches in there.
So I am not even sure of what size to get when I head over to HF.
And do some Allen wrenches come with a VERY short side to get into that space?
I am pretty sure they are original manifolds.
Thanks!

Remove carb with manifold from the head as a unit. Then the carb can be removed from the manifold if needed.

Yeah, you'll have to cut the end short just like the rest of us do.
As to what size, I don't remember

Pete - that is not the problem - i have new manifolds from JSE that need to go on.
removing carbs is no help in getting to the maniflod bolts because of the front / back clearance of the manifold part.

And then you will part of the "damn this is frustrating" club!!

After I got mine off the 1st time I chased the threads in the head with a tap so I could start them easier. I think the Allen wrench is 1/4" but I'm not positive.

I am soooo there! Just spent an exhausting 10 minutes with hacksaw on tough allen wrench. Does not fit!
Next.....[panting]

BTW - I have a wide assortment of bolts and tools and NONE of them seem to ever work on even the simplest sounding fix. This machine seems to a eclectic mix of whitworth, USE, English, and metric in some random configuration that will keep me running to hardware and auto parts stores in my nightmares.

That's half the fun :D Plus I always leave the store with a bunch of stuff I don't need because it seems so stupid to leave with one bolt in a tiny little bag :D

After you shorten the "short" leg of the allen wrench, heat/bend the long section so it angles back when the short end is in the bolt head. It makes it much easier to position/use.

Age old tool mod, so I just add, bevel the sharp edges for easier fiddlly insertion. If threads are good shape I usually only need tool to break few a couple turns then can finger em out. I essentially over torque back with anti-seize as never ever again want to deal with the corroded in or loctited metal shearing strain. You can't trust the fasteners on carbs or manifold so need to check now and then.
I leave the carb on the manifold to remove before lifting head to deal with.

I thought all Nortons came with one of those short Allen keys. LAB's is even shorter than mine.

Dave

The rounded end allen as in LAB's photo works too....Allows loosening at an angle...Easy to do once loose...

Thanks for the help. My main problem was I could not get any of my wrenches on there to verify size.
Finally figured out it was 7/32 after buying another (stubby) set of allen wrenches at Lowe's.
Now installing the JS flatsiders. Much easier to deal with - rubber mount to manifold instead of rigid.
And the air cleaners fit much better in that tight space than the one that previous owner had on there.
Fuel connection placed much differently than stock Amals, so just back from parts store (AGAIN) to get longer fuel line.
:D

DogT -
The tool kit on my '72 came with the Allen wrench but it wasn't shortened and was unusable for the carb bolts. I shortened it in the first couple months of ownership. Also more recently I bought a complete used Norton tool kit to carry on my Matchlesses (because I was used to it) and it also has the Allen key not shortened. This is the first I've heard of them coming already shortened.

WTF kind of size is 7/32?

What is the manifold-to-head fastener itself for thread size and pitch?

And is it the same as the top triple handlebar pinch bolts?

5/16"x 18 x 7/8" manifold bolt size....5/16" x 24 x 3/4" handlebar bolt size
