Hi All, I've got a 1970 BSA Starfire B25 that I want to restore. Can anyone tell me what colour this bike originally was please. I've looked on the internet and can't find a list of colours for each year. Any info appreciated thanks

According to Roy Bacon's BSA Single's Restoration book the 1970 B-25 US spec. motorcycle colors are:

1. Petrol tank is Flamboyant Blue with white stripes and red lining
2. Side cover and oil tank are painted white

However from looking at period photographs the side cover and oil tank have a blue stripe and red lining. I found a youTube of a guy doing a restoration on one and it seems to be pretty accurate. However he painted the fenders and originally the fenders were chrome. Here is the link to the youTube:

Last and least of course I am sure there are a number of 1969 bikes licensed as a 1970. Those bikes originally had fiberglass side panels and both the tank and the side panels were painted Bushfire Orange with black pinstripe. Also the engines were painted black except for the primary and timing cover.

Thanks for your reply and info. After checking the frame and engine numbers, I have worked out that the bike was made in May 1970. The bike in the video is completely different to mine, I now know the difference between US spec and UK spec. Mine is like the picture you've posted but without the high pipe. Would you know the colour scheme for the UK spec bike please? Or was 1969 and 70 the same colour? Thanks

According to Roy Bacon's Singles Restoration book the 1970 UK spec for the B25 is: black frame, forks and oil tank; chrome plated mud guards and headlamp shell; Flamboyant Blue petrol tank; side covers are black. This picture looks correct for the UK version however I believe that the tank badge is painted incorrectly. The sunburst background area should be natural brass color not red and the background of the BSA letters should be dark blue. Also the seat should be perforated gray fabric.

That bike looks great. I've bought some original tank badges made by J. Fray Ltd., Birmingham, but they're silver plated and not gold coloured. They look like the badges on this bike. The blue with white "BSA" is correct then?

The web site for a whole bunch of info on all the BSA unit singles is www.b50.org

Thanks very much, I've just looked on that site and it shows a 1970 Starfire in dark blue the same as the picture I've posted and not candy blue. This is where it gets confusing to which blue is correct?

The tank is correct but the low pipe and small silencer not. I had one new in 70. High pipe
with a fibre glass heat shield that was painted in a silver metal flake.
Nice bike to go local for an adult. I was 18 and thrashed it and it holed pistons with regularity.
Handled well and stopped well.

Thanks for your replies, mine is a UK spec bike the same as the blue one above. I have now ordered the Flamboyant Blue paint from John Chrichlow http://www.msmotorcyclesuk.com/. That is sprayed over a silver base coat. I'm getting the paint next week, but I have a few other things to do on the bike before it's on the road. I'll post a picture when it's done. Thanks for your help :)
