I thought the numbers should start with A65S.... font looks wrong vs. what I've seen pus that frame area raised and flat - is that right? I can pick up very cheap but don't want stolen stuff.

Advice appreciated. Bike looks pretty complete and decent but has changed hands at auction a couple times just this year.

I have a 66 Spitfire. It does not have the raised boss on the case. In fact it looks very similar to your picture but with an S instead of a 5. The frame however does not have the flat spot for a frame number. It is stamped into the curved area where the front engine lug goes around the frame.
 
Thanks for your help and pics, I appreciate your time. It sold - he offered it for $2K and it was a good deal, but my time's limited to wrench with a new job, and I just bought a '22 Yamaha Tenere 700 with 94 miles on it at a steal of a price. It's a very fun bike and I'm happy to ride either that or the Norton N15CS...for now. I had a '66 Hornet set up for the street back in the 90s, definitely a cool bike but I didn't fall in love with it. I'm sorta too dang tall to fit the British twins that I remember were gigantic road-burning beasts when I was a pup. Here's a pic of the Hornet from back in the mid 90's with my now 33 year old nephew on it. Would have been a good partner to the Norton, and I could have ridden with my 19 y/o son, but c'est la vie. I've now had that '66 Hornet, a nice 66 T120R, and now '66 Norton N15CS, so that must be the year.
