boyer and power box

i have a 650ss with boyer ignition and i wired in a power box as i would like to run it without battery
i get 13 volts dc from the pb output when i kick it over but as soon as i connect it to the white wire to the ignition box it drops to anywhere from 2- 6volts. the alternator is a sparx single phase.

i have even connected a new sparx power box as i thought the boyer pb was faulty
but its doing the same.

Any ideas as to why the voltage drops as soon as its connected to the wiring. i am stumped as to why this is happening. as it seems to be wired correctly

any help appreciated.

Just to clarify - this is with the engine running, or stopped.
And with a good (charged) battery, giving 12.4v or better - capable of giving good lights with the engine stopped ?

If the above is all good (no dud batteries), then it sounds like the wiring can't be correct, something else is getting power and dragging the voltage down - even a short to earth somewhere ?

hi

this is without a battery but with a power box that has
a capacitor which boyer states can run the bike without a battery
the bike is not running the voltage im getting is the output from the
power box which should fire the ignition box
but drops as soon as i connect it to the ignition white wire which is the input.

Does it give any sparks though ?

Presumeably not, or you wouldn't be asking here ?

no sparks
the boyer ignition needs pretty much full 12 volts to fire
which i have coming out the powerbox
only when i connect it to 1 wire i get 6 volts max
if i had a spark id be very happy!!!

I'm out of ideas, someone who knows these things better needs to speak.

Sounds like the pb doesn't store enough volts ?
Or doesn't get enough volts.

Is it wired for positive earth thro out the system , seems like its not wired correctly somewhere ? .

I run a Boyer + Power Box , got fed up with it stopping at night with the lights on when on tickover as soon as i touched the rear brake , now fitted a small battery as backup .

hi yes its positive ground wired.
its just very odd that the wire from the power box
gives 13 volts and when connected to just the white
power in wire of the ignition box i get 6 volts.

has anyone managed to run a boyer without a battery as they say
you can????

Chilly! does your battery charge ok???

Hmmm! , working on that at the moment , not to sure if it is or not , will report back when i know more .

Bloody electrics ! work of the devil :x

Hi,
During most of the ignition cycle the coil is connected, through the Boyer to the output of the PB, so effectively you are connecting a big load across the PB, as the capacitor has limited charge, think of it as a very small battery that has to be recharged after each time the engine fires, the chances are when you connect the white wire, in old terms the contact breakers are closed hence drop in voltage.
As this is a dynamic situation if it’s going to work connect it all up as you think is correct and give it the biggest kick possible.
May help Craven.

I'd go with that craven , always seemed as if mine needed a few kicks just to put a bit of charge into the system before it would fire , but not being into the black art of electrics it was just a theory of my own :? .

a little late to chime in on this - but I have a Boyer and Sparx 3-phase alt,I find even with a run down battery the bike will misfire/misbehave, so I know they say you can run without a battery... my understanding is Boyer needs a healthy amount of voltage to "wake-up" and function properly.

Seems to me the Powerbox is ideal for use only with a magneto, as both a regulator and battery eliminator. Depending on a capacitor for initial ignition power is a little "iffy". The small battery seems like a good compromise solution for points and coil ignition systems.

Hi

I run a Boyer ignition & a powerbox on my race triple. Nothing else. 10 steps fires & runs, good as gold.
With the Seeley Commando, same set up but with lights, horn etc, I could not kickstart it everytime. I added a small dry cell leisure battery just to hold enough charge to help start it. Sorted.
Then again with the lights on & braking for traffic lights etc you had to keep a few revs up to stop it stalling. I finally added a larger battery for peace of mind.
