BLACK "Roadster" Decal needed for '70 YELLOW Roads

Hi all-

I never thought it would be this much trouble to locate one stinkin' decal. A guy brought me his 1970 Roadster that his son had wrecked to cosmetically restore (the engine had just been rebuilt with less than 200 miles on it).

It's all original YELLOW gelcoat, the tank is trash since a hole got punched in it (we bought one of the new Pakistan-made steel tanks. VERY nice!), and I thought I was on my way to the painter's, but since we want the decals clear coated, I HAVE to find the original "Roadster" decal.

In 1970, there was a buttload of metalflake Roadsters, all of whom used the black with gold outline decals. The YELLOW one, however, used all BLACK decals.

The only number I have to go by from the pitiful 1970 parts book is 06-1699. Every vendor I have talked to so far has superceded it to the number for the GOLD outlined "Roadster" decal.

Can ANYONE help or shed light on the situation? The last guy who painted this bike must have had the same problem, as he left the "Roadster" decal off the sidecover completely (yes, it's the long one with the ignition at the tip).

Since I have gone to the trouble to restore the "halo" headlight, and the silver metalflake taillight, I'd REALLY like to get this decal right.

Over on the BritBike forum there is actually a sticker or decal forum. One of those cats might be able to steer you in the right direction of a supplier or someone who can make one-off custom decals.

Good to hear from you again. You may not remember me, but I was a frequent Cliff's customer ('69 'S' and now '75 Commando).

Anyway, have you tried Raber's Parts Mart in San Jose for your decal?

Are you going to New Ulm this year?

Are you sure they used all black on the yellow model? A friend has a '70 'S' model and the decals are black with gold.

A fairly simple solution is to get a stencil cut and paint the lettering on. That's an easy solution for a single color and actually looks better to me. If it were the black/gold you might have to find a sign painter to do it.

Sure I remember you! Time flies, doesn't it? It's been 12 years since I stood behind the parts counter at Cliff's! I don't recognize ANYONE when I go in there now!

Yes, I'm definitely going to New Ulm. Did you see me there last year? I was propped up in a chair with a neck brace on and drugged out of my mind. I was three days post-op from a neck fusion surgery. My daughter drove me down in my '79 VW Westfalia Camper. I didn't have a bike, but after 28 consecutive New Ulms, I wasn't about to miss one over a silly surgery!

This year, I intend to RIDE. Field Events at least. I'll be bringing "Chex", and with a little luck, a (new to me) pit bike that I'm restoring. I don't have much time left, but the good news is that the engine ran fine before I tore it down to restore the cosmetics. We'll see......

I remember you, Mike. I've been seeing you around and appreciating Chex for years (this will be my 9th New Ulm). Your little BSA was pretty danged nice, too!

Glad to hear you'll be in the field events, my favorite part of the weekend. Maybe Sally & I will manage to wrest one of the "two-up" trophies from Gene & Trina.
