Bike tax in the UK

Not sure which boggles my mind more, the idea of having to pay a fine for not paying a non existent fee or the idea of having to notify the powers that be that a vehicle you own is no longer on the road. Not to make light of it, but I'm starting to understand the inspiration for this:

It’s all a massive load of bollox.

What other licensable pursuit requires you to register NOT to have a license?

Do I need to register to NOT have a shotgun license, fishing license, TV license, etc, etc?

NO!

But I need to register when I DO NOT have road fund license, and even though they already know this.

It is very wrong, on many levels, practical and principle.
In another life i owned a steam roller back in the 80s. Tax exempt because it was classed as a road making machine or something similar. It had to display a valid tax disc and the fee was recorded as 00.00. And yes it was also mot exempt.

Perhaps time to start a new thread: on what happened when you took your antique bike to MOT...

Ha! We had the same thing. A hospital kept sending us a bill for $0.00. Well, my wife was ignoring them until the dunning letters arrived followed by a threat to send it to a collection agency.

We sent them a check for $0.00; problem solved.

Yes they always assume you have one with a tactic of bullying and harassment. It always puzzles me that if they are a genuine arm of the state why they do not use the electoral register. Even if you write to them , speak to them no record is kept and you are always the present occupier . I think they are just a debt collecting agency... Friend of mine went to court in Norfolk for some routine motoring offence , paid his fine and then found some jokers wearing shades on his doorstep demanding £80 pound collection for an alleged underpayment of 30 pence.

I returned from last years Belgian rally (2017) to find a letter stating, 'Please pay the above fine immediately' - it referenced a Magistrates Court in the north of England. After a sharp intake of breath I started investigating & discovered that I had tripped a speed camera en route to the Lake District for the rally in 2016. Unfortunately I'd missed the NIP as I had moved house & forgot to update my V5, a £600+ fine had increased to the salty sum of £1200 with collection costs (oh yes +6 points) - for Failure to Disclose.

There was no point appealing because the fine for not updating your V5 is up to £1000. Ironically the same week in 2016 I'd picked up 3 points in my Z4 - so I now drive like a very timid person, the only good point(?) was that they'd run a year before I even discovered them, so 15 months to go :)

The moral of this tale is to keep your paperwork up to date! (unlike the dozy counter clerk in the Post Office sent who my Historic Vehicle application to the DVLA without actually writing those all important words on the V5 :-( I got it back from the DVLA this week with a note asking why it had been sent to them, so it's back to the PO tomorrow! )

Ariel is a dead give away?!

I would GLADLY go to court and defend myself against that...
As far as I know, there is no legal requirement to hold a licence for an unused ariel.
I had a friend who went through this kind of thing. Basically, he discovered the authorities are full of lies and assumptions.
They picked the wrong bloke on this occasion, but it’s still a very poor show.

You would have a fight on your hands and might have lost the court case, as the onus is on you to prove that you do not use it for TV signals. Unless the law has changed somewhat, having ANY apparatus capable of receiving TV signals constitutes having need for a licence unless it is only used to receive digital radio signals;

TV Licensing offers the following advice to those who have a TV but 'who wish to make it clear that they do not need a licence':[69]

remove the television from the aerial;

cover the aerial socket so that it can't be used;

ensure that when channels on the television are selected no television signal is received.

However, TV Licensing also says that it is not compulsory to follow this advice. To listen to digital radio on a TV, for example, it would be necessary to attach the TV to an aerial and tune the TV to different channels. The BBC has made it clear that it is legal to listen to digital radio using a TV without holding a TV licence.[64]

I have to say that I'm enjoying this thread. It is very like the TV series Grumpy Old Men. The same thing happens when I get together with my mate Andy, much to my wifes amusement. I guess we are all in the right age group.

The reason for grumpy old men is kinda obvious...

Just being old means you’ve had to put up with a lifetime of shit. That’s enough to make anyone grumpy !

I think my primary defence argument would be the lack of ownership of a television.

And I would definitely be prepared to fight that one!

Would I also have to prove I’ve not been fishing if accused of not having a fishing license !?

This morning at the ungodly hour of 8.30 knocking on door.. Think it must be them they keep threatening but no pleasent surprise its a parcel of zinc additive not promised until after the 30th May... Maybe they think its an unlicensed Tardis I have

Pete we also do not own a television so do not need to fret about things.
But if buzz bombs enter Brit airspace how do we know more warnings other than crackly radio ?
Eddie as a sport fisherman I've learned that you are not fishing and do not require a license until you cast out and your line hits the water. You are simply standing around holding a fishing rod. Say that politely to the conservation officer.
